You can either use a cotton ball soaked in saline (not water) or a q-tip (which is what I use). You shouldn't try to clean too deep into their ears, but anything that you can see to clean is fine. Their ears shouldn't have large amounts of residue earwax (brownish color) left in their ears.

With Peroxide and Q- Tips) You can get something like gauze put some peroxide on it and start wiping the inside of the ear. Take a litle bit of peroxide pour in the ear massage the ear from the back and work it a little and then you can take a Q-Tip and clean out the ear. Be careful because the dog will automatically want to shake it's head. Don't go straight down into the dog's ear you can damage the ear drum.Go inside all around the inside and I guarantee you all kinds of stuff will come out. You may need to go to the Vet. the dog could have mites or even allergies but the peroxide will help. Some breed of dogs are prone to have severe ear problems.

there's a solution that looks like thick yellow milk called panalog. You can get it for a few bucks at the vet. you basically squeeze some into the ear canal and rub the ear and the surrounding tissue. If there's a ton of stuff in there, it'll start to make a "squishy" sound..
Then take a cotton swab and just go for it. If you must use a q=tip.exercise the same caution as with your own ears...don't jam it all the way in becuase it can cause damage.
Usually if you really get in there with your finger and a cotton swab or two, all of it will come out.
I usually clean my dogs ears every two weeks or so.

Put some mineral oil in their ears, or you can go to the vet and get a special solution. Then kindof massage the ear canal to loosen some residue. You can clean a bit with a Q tip, but be careful. The dog will probably shake the rest out by itself.

man you guys have got some really calm dogs! I have a westie and he is around 12 years old. The westie breed after they get a little age on them start to get allergies, and ear and eye infections along with them. If I get water into my dogs ears and don't get it out he goes nuts, he does that anyway after you get any thing close to his ears. he rubs his head on the floor until he is panting and still goes for more. i make him stop. and not do it all. drives him crazy but I have seen him rub until they were bleeding. Kind of like poison ivy breakouts. itch.
His ears get awful. the vet prescribed some kind of otic solution that you drop some into the ears , it is kind of like a glycerin consistency. and then you rub them a little bit. If infection is present , do this twice a day. but do not put anything into his ears. period. if you need to clean the outer contours of the ear use the end of a wash cloth around your finger and gently oh so gently try to get into the crevices where the stinky stuff collects.
If I put a mild diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide in his ears he just goes slobbery and cannot stand the popping of the bubbles he hears. I mean this dog is almost deaf and still those popping bubble and ear full of something just blows his synapes.
He is allergic to fleas, and I mean he rips his hair out tring to scratch the itch it is so intense. I have medicine I give him daily, and occasionally he has to have a cortizone shot. I just don't really know what else I can do. I love the little snot and he adores me. I am sitting here and he is as close as he can get. he is asleep on my feet on the floor! If I move he follows me and I can not get 2 inches from him or he goes to whining if he can;t find me. Poor pup. I do love my westie.

Qitips! my dogs love it! it is like a special treat for them. dogs like to have stuff in their ear. Their ears are usually pretty clean. My dog had an ear infection once and it came out with brown stuff. But I think this is a nice at home way to do it.

Well you could go to your vet and get some ear wash for your dog, or you could use mineral oil and a kleenex. Depending on the condition of your dogs ear the ear wash could make it worse, so you should ask your vet about your dogs ears.

Very carefully, use a cotton ball or q-tip with an ear wash. You can also use sweet oil, but any kind of oil can get the hair around their ears a bit messy. You can also use warm water on the cotton ball and gently pat out the inside, but don't go too deep.

I would suggest getting a novasan solution from your vet. If your dogs ears have any odor, are red, warm to the touch, or seem to be very bothersome for your dog, you may need to take your dog to the vet. They would be able to determine the cause of infection and prescribe the appropriate medication.
