I want to purchase a spotting scope for my Dad. He has a backyard where he watches birds, deer, etc. The longest range he would need is around 200 yards. I'd like to get a fairly good one for a reasonable price. Any recommendations on magnification so he's not disappointed?

You might take a look at the BSA 20-60X60MM , they are a very good value $70-$80 , come with a hard case, tripod, and a rail mount so you could mount the spotting scope to a window or deck rail.....

If you go to the website for Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops you will find several spotting scopes. They have variable power and fixed power scopes. A variable is more versitile. Something with an upper end around 36x should be fine for 200 yards.
