It is most likely to be an amalgam ("silver") filling. Another faint possibility is a material called Ketac-Silver, but that is very rarely used anymore.
When an amalgam is first placed and set within the dentist's rooms, it has not hardened to the point where it can be polished, so it will initially appear pale grey (Australian spelling!). The dentist may polish it at a subsequent appointment. If not, then the amalgams usually self-polish in time by the action of eating.
White fillings (composites) are another choice, but they do not have the general long-term durability of the amalgams in high-pressure situations like your chewing teeth. In the RIGHT circumstances white fillings will work well - so the next time you need a filling, ask the dentist if a white filling would be a suitable choice.
There is no proof at all that amalgams are injurious to your health. This is codswallop spread by unscrupulous or misguided dentists who will make a buck by changing your amalgams to composites. In Australia, it would be a legal offence to claim that there is a health benefit to be gained by removing amalgams, because there is no supporting scientific evidence. Damn, that feels good!

It is a dental amalgam. Dental amalgam is a stable alloy made by combining elemental mercury, silver, tin, copper and possibly other metallic elements. Although dental amalgam continues to be a safe, commonly used restorative material, some concern has been raised because of its mercury content. However, the mercury in amalgam combines with other metals to render it stable and safe for use in filling teeth.

Do you know that you have other choices for dental fillings? You can also ask for tooth coloured fillings if do not want your fillings to be noticeable. Go to the website to find out more.

I am betting that you either have an amalgum filling (metal alloy + mercury) or Ketac silver. Amalgum is still one of the srtongest filling materials that can be used.

is it a metal filling? yeah they do that. i guess its much easier to fill the tooth with a melted metal than anything else. just be glad they stopped using lead and mercury to do that.

That happened to me too. A few days later it was silver. Still don't know why.
