Shame on me for asking an honest question?

2006-08-30 15:38:42 · update #1

I'm just trying to clairify something here. I'm not trying to offend any members of the Mormon Church. Keep in mind this 'rumor' if thats all it is, is printed in literature, and on the internet. Even though, I disagree with Mormonism, I know that everything many Christians say about Mormons is not true. Which is why I am asking this question.

"Intercourse with the Virgin Mary" is the exact line from the tract I'm reading, which is why it is the wording I used.

Yes. Mormons believe God has a body and had sex with his daughter Mary and conceived Jesus.

It was the result of natural action, (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 8, p. 115).
Jesus was not begotten by the Holy Ghost." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1, page 51); (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 1, page 19).
"The Father came Himself and favoured that spirit with a tabernacle instead of letting any other man do it" (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, page 218, 1857.)
The birth was the result of natural action, (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, p. 115).
"The Father God was the literal parent of Jesus in the flesh as well as in the spirit." (Religious Truths Defined, p. 44)
"Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers," (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, page 547.)
"There is nothing figurative about his [Jesus’] paternity; he was begotten, conceived and born in the normal and natural course of events" (Mormon Doctrine, by Bruce McConkie, page 742.)

Nope, this is not actual. We trust that Jesus became conceived through the ability of the Holy Ghost. Mary became a virgin. From the e book of Mormon Alma 7: 10 10 And behold, he will be born of Mary, at Jerusalem this is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a powerful and chosen vessel, who will be overshadowed and conceive through the ability of the Holy Ghost, and produce forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.

At different times a century age a few church leaders tried to explain that Jesus was the literal son of God. These few comments are taken out of context to disturb investigators.

Most churches try to avoid any controversy by using doctrines like immaculate conception. As far as I can determine there is no official Church position contrary to citing the Bible.

For those of you who clearly do not understand the Roman Catholic faith, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of MARY.

Mormons believe the Bible to be the word of God. Among many, many other references, John begins his gospel by saying, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” Thus, the Bible teaches that Christ is the “only begotten” son of God. HOW He was begotten is not spelled out in scripture, probably because God wisely foresaw the sick way some people might express that thought. (Allusions to the current question are purely intentional.)

Mormons don’t know any more about how Jesus is the only begotten son of God than any other Christian. Although we do have more scripture than other Christian faiths, our additional scripture is also silent on that point. (See above.)

BTW, this question is an excellent example of a truth about my faith. It goes like this: “The position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is so strong its enemies must distort, deceive and dissemble to have much to say against it.”

The shame is not on you for asking the question, but for the degrading, inflammatory way you asked it. Saying you are merely quoting from some anti-Mormon pamphlet is just passing the buck.

Hi I just asked a similar question and the people that answered gave great answers. Just click on my name "Becky" and you will get my Q@A Page. Than you will see the question and all the great answers. In fact there is a Christian answer that explains it adequately to me. There is also interestingly enough a Muslim perspective too.

One criticism though and please don't take it as a put down. It might be a little disrespectful to use the term "intercourse". I knew that the Christian belief involved a spiritual aspect and just wanted to understand it. I think in my question you might find the answer you seek in your question.

Have a nice evening and G-d Bless You.

Remember, the Mormon church started 100 years ago by a man who went to prison for polygomy and tax evasion, what they believe is going to be a little different. His name was Joseph Smith, an interesting fellow, found 12 golden discs in his field, translated them, they ended up being a new book of the bible, then when people wanted to see these alleged discs, whadyaknow, Joseph couldn't find them. They were gone.

I don't think any religion believes that. The Catholics and Episcopalians think that God made the Virgin Mary pregnant through immaculate conception.

Um no. Mormons are Christian too and believe Jesus came to be the same way the other Christian faiths do. Don't get your answers on here... go to the source:
