I had a nigerian try to scam me once from Yahoo Personals. They pretended to be an accounting student and said they were from the US but studying abroad in Lagos, Nigeria. I remembered about the 419 scam I had read in the papers and instantly knew what was up. The first hints of being scammed is if someone asks you for money. Afterall, why would you pay money to someone you don't even know? They'll pretend like they don't have enough money to get their plane tickets and stuff like that. It's for this reason that you should only date someone in your area and not even bother with people so far away. Typically scammers are from far away countries and will pretend to be from your area. So, what you'll want to do is ask questions about your area and make subtle references about it. For instance, I asked the Nigerian about highways in the area and local hangouts. Also, if ANYONE sends you an email with western union information in it immediately stop talking to them. Lastly, if something seems too good to be true it probably is.

you probably are. people post fake pictures of good looking men/women when they are actually from some backwater country and are trying to get your bank account info. if they seem to be american and act romantic, they're probably married. don't trust anyone u meet on the web. hey, you can't even trust me. you don't know me, and never will....mwuuuuhahahahaha

It's hard to tell unless you talk to them on the phone or meet them in person.

They're always smooth to you or always telling you exactly what they think you want to hear...while leading you to give them more of yourself to them.
