If you are purchasing for your own use i recommend you get the all-in-one printer that has the scanner included. You can scan, copy, and print on the same machine. Although HP is dominant in the field I have had good luck using an Epson CX4800. It also has slots to read CF and other cards for pictures. We paid less than $100 for the CX4800

I have an HP PSC 1410 All-in one, it scans, copies and prints. It is very easy to use and was not all that expensive about $80, if I remember correctly. I've had it for 3 or 4 months now and I love it. Hp has really good stuff.

I have an HP photo scanner and it works great for me
it's convenient, quick, simple and you can make copies like a photocopier by pushing a button on the printer...it also gives great results on photos

HP has horrible quality but very easy to use.
Epison and Cannon are semi-easy to use but they both have awesome quality if you invest the money into it.

Canon probably makes the best and easiest to use scanners.

Look for one that has the buttons right on the scanner for "PDF", "PRINT", "OCR" etc.. those come with nice software that makes it really easy.
