I'm allergic to cats & thanks to my wife we own one. Usually every few days the allergy attacks different parts of me (one day - red eyes, next time difficulty breathing, then areas of itchy skin....never really know when or where I'll be affected). I live with it have gotten used to it. My question is about 2-3 times a year I get blisters at the entrance of my nostrils (look like poison ivy bumps).............Can this also be attributed to the CAT? (& what the heck should I put on them?) THANKS

Cat allergies are tough to deal with! Since cats clean themselves by licking there is a layer of dry saliva on their coat. This dried saliva will fall off of a hair and get airborne. This dried saliva is even a smaller particulate than their dander (mild dandruff we all have).

You can try one of the animal allergy sprays on the market. With these products you spray the cat and it is supposed to keep the dander in check. I do not have any feedback on these products.

The best way to get relief is to be practical. Don't touch the cats and try to keep your distance. Have a cat-free bedroom. When you sleep your bronchial system is relaxed and more susceptible to allergens. You may want to have an air purifier in the bedroom running on high during the day.

You should also try one of the over the counter antihistamines. This will help with your nasal sensitivity.

I've been allergic to cats my entire life. I've also lived with cats four times. The first time, it took me a week to get used to them. The second time was longer, it goes on like this... You can get used to an animal you're allergic to. After that, it does not affect you.

Unless it's picking up another animal's dander. If you're getting it around your nostrils, it's obviously something you're breathing in. Check into ragweed, pollen, other cats that your cat is mating with... that sort of thing. Or maybe you have pests that the cat hasn't noticed or caught, yet. I'm mildly allergic to about everything with fur. That includes mice and rats. Have you checked for them?

First and foremost, get rid of the cat. Next contact a Doctor, the blisters you're experiencing may not even be related to being exposed to the cat.

i have been allergic to cats since i was little, i also love cats....so i have 2, at first my allergies were so bad i would spend days in bed, then i got used to them and went to the doctor he gave me Zyrtec and now usually my allergies are not too bad (most days i don't have any)...but if something else is high (mold, pollen) they get bad (but not nearly as bad as they were), and we just bought a rainbow sweeper and use it like an air purifier ....and now i only take allergy meds once a week.

I have two cats and a dog and am allergic to everything and have asthma. I take Allegra for allergies and the Singulair helps asthma and allergies too. I have no problems. You need to be on meds or you'll always have problems.

i have the same allergies to cats and get the same sores. i've not found anything for them, i just deal with them till they heal, i did try a triple antibiotic cream once, don't know if it worked. i take "claritin" reditabs, 1 daily, this helps ALOT. i get them at wal-mart. i would ask your wife tp PLEASE get a pet that doesn't make you sick, she should care for "you" more. maybe a different kind of pet. i don't think the sores are from the cat's but from enviromental allergies, i have these as well and the sores come when the outdoors allergens are driving me nuts. anyway, good luck and thanks for the good question!
