How old is the cat? The older the cat the harder (but not impossible) it will be to get it to use the litter box. You need to consistently take the cat to the litter box. Feed the cat at the same time everyday and when the cat is done eating immediately take the cat to the litter box. You can find allot more info on the Internet. I would start with Google. Google knows everything.
Good Luck.

This is kind of a silly way to train a cat but this is how we did it one time. When my daughter was learning to go to the bathroom herself she had a potty chair and one day after she had done her business our cat was hunting a place to go do her business so we poured the urine into the litter box and set the cat in there with it. The cat sniffed of it and began covering it up. From then on the cat knew what the litter box was for. I know it is kind of crazy but it worked. Good luck

Most cats will do this naturally.
But we once got a kitten that had been raised outside. He held it for like 18 hours, and we finally called the vet.
The vet said to put him in the litter box, then take a damp paper towel and rub his bottom with it. He will think the mother cat is licking him, and he will go in there. He did, and he has been litter trained ever since.

All the advice before me is great, I have a suggestion though for breaking them from going in the wrong places.
Generally if any other animal has marked a spot the cats instinct is to mark there also. Put dishes of food where they have marked. They really are clean by nature and wont void there. Also neutering or spaying will help prevent territorial marking and their urine wont be as strongly scented.
Changing the litter often is important also, cats are fastidious.

Start when they are very young, and just put them in the litter box. They naturally "play"/dig in the litter and practically teach themselves. If you are trying to train a cat, rather than a kitten, your best bet is to put them in it and let them explore. If you catch them urinating or pooping anywhere other than the litter box, pick them up and put them in the litter box, DURING the act. Also, if you notice the cats are going to the same spot to potty each time, try putting the litter box in that spot.

When it starts to poo it may make a mess but pick up the cat and put it in the litter box. In time it will learn.

They are so easy to train. Find where theyve gone to the bathroom and put it in litter box. Put them in to smell and they are usually trained instantly
