Do you need a degree? no. Do you have to have some education? yes. med term, typing, and an anatomy class would be helpful in actually landing a job.

Yes. I am not real positive about the qualifications now, but I was a medical
transcriptionist for 20 years. However,
I did work myself up from the lowest desk
job (which was death certificates) for years
and when the option became available for me,
I took city college courses in medical classes.

You need knowledge of a lot of medical terminology, which would be pretty hard to get without going to school.
