Um....preferrably a domesticated house cat. I think.
I suppose I'll elaborate as best I can. It depends on what you're looking for. Most cat personalities are generally the same, but some breeds have their own quirks. For instance, siames cats can be a bit fisitidious and are VERY talkative. So if you don't want a noisy cat, don't go with a siamese. Someone once told me that you're not supposed to give Manx cats catnip because it will make them go nuts. He said he experienced it himself. No idea if it's true for all Manx, as I've never owned one nor done reading on the breed.
If you're just looking for a good all-around house cat, try checking out the selection at your local humane society/no-kill shelter/animal control. A lot of these places do temperment testing now to help provide people with the best animal for their living situation. And as some others already pointed out, cats in shelters need homes way more than the kittens from the breeders.
Both of our cats are rescues. Both are mixes, both are sweet, and both were adults when we adopted them. You couldn't ask for better cats.

It does not have to be a breed. Just get a plain old regular cat. Why do you have to have a 'breed'.? Go to the pound or shelter or look in the paper and find a kitten that need s a home. To many people think they have to impress people with a breed of dog or cat. Mixes are just as nice and pretty and sometimes have a personality to boot! I have been given pure breed Siamese and have found or saved mixes and they are all cats with different personalities and temperaments and love or distant awareness of you!

Get a kitten or adult cat from the shelter or humane society. Better yet, get two. There's a huge overpopulation of cast-off pets in the world. You can literally save the lives of some if you get some from these sources.
And if you get 2 cats, they will entertain each other during the day when you're gone. One bored cat can be destructive. Two will play and play, giving them exercise to boot. Just be sure to get them fixed.
Oh, if you want to sleep in on the occasional weekend morning, don't get a siamese or part siamese. Our last one would stand at the bedroom door and yell for breakfast every morning at 6 AM.

Whatever one has the personality that you enjoy. Every breed has every kind of personalities within it, just like humans. Personally, I have three Siamese cats. They tend to be quite focused on people and act rather much like dogs (come when you call, wait for you at the door, follow you, need to have contact with you most of the time), but they are also very vocal with their chirps and meows and baby-like cries. Choose whatever animal suits your lifestyle (cuddlier vs. independent, etc). Consider adopting two together so they can have a cat-buddy to play with, especially if you are away a lot (like at work). Try petfinder.com for a list of animals at local shelters and rescue groups and you can see pictures and descriptions of animals near your house and what it costs to adopt them and if discounts are given for more than one adoption at a time, etc. They have every breed imaginable available, and you can find purebreds as well as mix-breeds on there, and do a search for what specific breed you decide on. Or start with the local shelter name and see what they have available. That is where I found my last two kittens, and they are just perfect!

it really matter what type of personality you want. i love somali cats, but.......well here is a list of good and bad.
Good:
a loveable family cat
doesn't shed very much
loves to play
gives you a lovely purr when sleepy
very quiet, barely ever meows
Bad:
i don't know about other somalis, but mine loves to eat anything and everything. she found pickle juice on the floor and lapped it up!
this cat will clean themselves 5 times a day. some people like that and others do not
this cat needs attention. if you work all day, get 2 somalis so they can play with each other. they love playtime.
this cat can be tricky. that is what i named mine, Tricky. i read in a magazine that 1 time a somali owner came home and her house was covered in toilet paper. she found her somali cat with the roll in her mouth and the cat was "smiling" at her. (somalis close their eyes and look at you happily)
don't get a somali if you don't want excitement in your life. oh, and a uniqe thing is that they trill like a bird.

Really anyone. The cat breeds do not differ as much as the dog breeds. A domestic shorthair is a good choice!

The best cat to have in your home is a calico. The will tolerate you better than any other breed. Just make sure that you get a pure calico and not a calico Siamese cat or you will her the mouth. Trust me, I have one. She meows allot to get what she wants. Good Luck!!

Just go to the animal shelter. Besides getting a beautiful grateful loving animal, you will probably save it from being killed. All cats are lovable if you are good to them. Be sure to leave out dry food and fresh water all the time for it, besides the canned food or whatever you give it.

the top three best cats to have in your house hold are:
1. the persian
2. the maine coon
3. the ragdoll
each cat associates well with their owner, and all are beautiful and kind.
more about the cats-
Creatures of habit, persians are most at home in an atmosphere of security and serenity, but with love and reassurance, can easily adapt to the most boisterous of households. Their quiet, melodious voices are pleasant and non-abrasive. They communicate delightfully with their large expressive eyes and make charming pets for all ages. Persians have short heavily-boned legs to support their broad, short bodies. They like to have their feet firmly planted and are not given to high jumping and climbing. Playful but never demanding, they love to pose and will drape themselves in a favorite window or chair, enhancing the decor in much the same way as a treasured painting. Persians are tremendously responsive and become a constant source of joy and delight to their owners. Pleasurable as an unexpected sunbeam, their companionship is close and enduring.
The Maine Coon is well known for its loving nature, kindly disposition and great intelligence. Maines are especially good with children and dogs and have always been a popular and sought after companion.
Ragdolls adore their humans. They run to greet you at the door, follow you from room to room, flop on you, sleep with you, and love you. They are gentle, carefully avoid scratching people, and are good with children, the elderly, and dogs. Ragdolls tend to be floor cats, not jumpers. They feel that humans prefer purrs to yowls, and keep their voices softly musical.
Ragdolls are considerate of humans’ busy schedules, so they bathe and groom their moderately long, silky coats themselves. They should be groomed with a steel comb as a part of cuddling (“one hand stroke, one comb stroke; one hand stroke, one comb stroke...”), but most never need it. They shed very little, rarely have hairballs, are well behaved, and eager to please.
