I wouldn't. My son had a cast on his arm for 7 weeks and after the X-rays had to have another one put back on for another 3 weeks because it wasn't completely healed. The hospital has a special saw that doesn't cut the skin even if it touches it. I think he can make it another week and I'll bet that he won't over sleep the next time!!! If it's not completely healed he takes the risk of rebreaking it and then he'll be in a cast for another 7-10 weeks. Does he really want that or better yet do you?

DON'T! If it is a compound open fracture, ABSOLUTELY NOT! Ethically, it should be a professional who must remove the plaster cast. If the hospital can't accommodate him, surely there are others but they don't have his medical records. If the plaster stinks, then there must be something rotting in there and only a doctor could properly attend to it. I suggest that you find another doctor in that hospital to handle the case... the hospital is there and it is only the attending doctor who is not available (oh, sweet... YOU! Stay there and rot until the doctor says he'll attend to you!) but there always is an alternate. Otherwise, go to that hospital's emergency room and classify the problem as a medical emergency. The stink implies decay... that classifies itself as emergency given a living body.

I fractured a bone in my foot and the Dr. told me I'd be wearing a cast for 6 wks. However, I had 2 small children at the time & a lot of chores. I wore it for 2 days, got a pair of scissors & cut it off. Took me about an hr. I was in pain, had to use crutches. Never went back to dr. Told them I took it off myself. Now, if I stand for long periods of time or run, it hurts. I'd say that by 7 wks he should be good as new, but I'm no dr. Then again, Sept. 6 is almost here.

Isn't that modern life for you? Oversleep, and they make you wait another week, and you can bet no other doctor will touch your friend, for fear of malpractice lawsuits & other fun stuff.
You know what I'd do...? I'd poke around on the Internet until I found a website that explains how cast removal is done. I'll bet that one exists. THEN I'd decide with my friend if we wanted to play Home Surgery.
Good luck to you both!

Hmm, tough call...I would suggest that the cast stay on, that way when they xray the leg and find that the bone hasn't healed all the way yet, they can put on a new one, and your friend won't risk re-injury.

Personally, I would not remove a cast until my doctor told me it was ok to remove it. But, it is your friends leg and if he is old enought to make good decisions then I would help him out of his misery.

No, you're not trained to look for anything abnormal like doctors do, when the cast is removed.

You don't need tools, just soak it in a tub of warm water. Hell, I've taken stitches out of myself and others.

I SAY NO...
LET THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW HOW TO DO THE JOB DO IT.
WHAT IF YOU CUT THE DUDE? YOU ARE NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE FOR A REMOVAL OF A CAST.
I SAY NO WAY. SORRY!
