He takes off his shoes and socks, holds his eye open, and then giggles while rubbing his big toe around in his eye. Of course, when I try to make him stop he gets a rise and it only makes the behavior worse. Why would he do this? Has anyone else had this problem? How can I discourage this behavior without making a big deal about it?

I wouldn't worry so much but I don't want him to cause any infection or injury to his eye...

Yes, it is natural for you to be very concerned about what he's doing. Your concern is in your baby's best-interest! You don't want him to get an eye infection, or worse, scratch his pupil with his toenail and go blind! You shouldn't worry about how he reacts when you take his toe out of his eye! He doesn't know any better, he's just a baby. But you know better, so you shouldn't allow him to hurt himself.

Talk to your pediatrician about this. And in the meantime, please do not allow him to do this any longer.

My son did the same thing. He couldn't breathe with his socks on!! As far as the putting his feet in his eyes-- he just found a new thing to do with his feet. He will eventually get tired of it although you might try ignoring him when he does it because if he gets attention from it he will continue to do it. When a child that age gets attention good or bad they will feed off it and continue the behavior until they are bored with it or the attention stops whichever comes first! Good luck!

The more u react the more he thinks it's fun.Keep his toes clean and nails trimmed. Try distracting him. Don't freak out, then he'll lose interest

I think thats adorable, usually they like to put their toes in their mouth, like that "psuedo guy" said tho- because he can!!! Don't worry, if it was hurting his eye, he would probably stop.

Because he can. Your paying attention to it, makes him want to do it more. Just ignore him, and the behavior should eventually stop. Just be sure his feet are fairly clean.

He thinks it's cool, just explain to him about the damage he can do to his eye. I don't mean to laugh but that is so cute, but don't assume that if you ignore it it will pass

When he pokes it and it hurts, he'll stop. The end.
