Age is not a number but a mind-set. There is nothing worse than a woman that thinks "well, I'm 40, or 50, so I guess I'll chop off all of my hair." Hair length and styles are not about age and I really wish women would realize this. Is short hair easier? It seems to be but what is wrong with spending a bit of time pampering ourselves? When I see older women with longer hair, either down or in a bun or twist, I think they look beautiful. Don't let your age dictate how old you feel inside. I'm 37 but I feel like a 21 year old!!!!!!!!

Why shouldn't she? At that age do she still wear lip stick and eye shadow? I know a woman pass 40 who likes wearing thong underwear because it makes her feel sexy. If she can care for it and rock it. I think long hair to the small of the back or the b*u*m is way sexy. And if she doesn't' want to wear it down, she has way more options to style it up.

My observation is that society (just as you have proven by your statement) associates long hair with the young. I have noticed that older people tend to have shorter hair so I asked a stylist -- answer: as you age it is more difficult to keep your hair in good condition as hormonal changes cause entire body to produce less moisture (skin, hair, etc.) so women opt for shorter hair because it looks healthier.

As one who has had both extremely long and extremely short hair, short hair is much harder and more expensive to take care of. Long hair is easier because you don't have to have it cut as often because you are not maintaining a "style", you can put it up when you're busy or hot, it doesn't look as dirty as quickly, and bed-head isn't such a problem.

If you have healthy hair (even if it is gray) any length will look good on you as long as you use the shape of your face and your lifestyle as your guide!!!

Who's to tell you not to have long hair after 40 or 50?! I know women even older than that that have beautiful long (some even gray) hair.

Ive been debating this too. although i have a good 16 years til I'm 40, I'm thinking that I'm going to want my hair long enough to at least put up. my hair is thick coarse and wavy, so short do's arnt my favorite style. theres something alluring about long hair on 'older' women i think. not every woman has it, so the ones that do tend to stick in your mind. i say even if society says to cut it, its whats in side YOU to decide to keep it or not.

i thought when i was in my 40s i would cut it, but actually cut it in my 30s then let it get longer again--the color has to look good..but i see lots of women in their 40s with medium long hair (not waist length) and it looks good. but i feel there is a point where i have to cut it short- so when i turn 50 i will. and i will be free!

I turned 40 this year and have no plans to cut my hair. I think the reason a lot of older women cut their hair shorter has less to do with aesthetics and more to do with ease of care. As we get older, it becomes more difficult to lift our arms over our heads, which can make styling longer hair difficult.

I love to see long hair for women over 50 . Specially when they are greying. Then entirely white. It is so rare!

It depends!

For example, I'm 53, and have yard-long hair, but I usually wear my hair tied up. I find it not only comfortable, but becoming, as the hair is swept up away from my face & neck.

No one suspects that it's as long as it is...until I let it down to prove it!

I think that it should be like the woman likes it. There's no right or wrong when it comes to age and hair.
