I applied for the Sheriff's department and passed my, physical agility, written, and psychological. My harassment charge from 10 years ago is all they said was preventing me from the job. I had a $50.00 fine from when I went to my house and called my now ex-wife a name when I was picking up my clothes. I had caught her in bed with someone the day before. Am I screwed for life now?

most counties will have a free lawyer consultation available, make that appointment and get the expungement paperwork. You will need to fill out quite a bit of paperwork and possibly have letters of reference from people who can vouch for the fact that the criminal charge was an aberration, a one time thing. file the papers with your county and get a court date, you will probably not need a lawyer, you will see the judge and the judge will read over everything in your file, then make the decision whether to expunge that matter from your county file or not. be aware that the state BCA may not be expunged from a county judge's decision, meaning the only file that can be sealed by order of a county judge is the county's file. the police and state agencies may still have record of that crime. It may be worth the few dollars to run a state criminal background check on yourself to see if that matter even shows up in your file so you will know what people see when they run a check on you.

You can get an attorney and they will have the record expunged for a small but not insignificant fee (about 3000). But you may also be able to give a letter of explanation to the dept and they will overlook it. You just have to disclose the facts when you are applying. You did disclose that right? Anyway, you should get that expunged. Not sure if you can get away with not revealing the charge even after it is expunged though...But the attorney should be able to tell you that...

Pretty much screwed. I have a friend who had a similar problem. He doesn't have an actual criminal charge on his record he just has a report filed. I would suggest that you contact a local lawyer and talk to him/her about your options. Most lawyers will discuss your case with you the first time without any charge. And you can find out if the job is worth the financial investment it will take to have your record expunged.

Ask the Clerk of Court in your county, how you can have your record expunged. Usually its an application or form to the District Attorney.

Only if you want to be in law enforcement. I think it will always be on your record unless you can get it expunged.
