What makes you think that you need to be a christian to be sure about God. Thats not the way that it works.
Several years ago I had an unusual experience concerning an uncle, a distant relative who lived over a thousand miles away.
While driving my car I suddenly felt the unmistakable presence of this relative that I hardly even knew. He was more like someone I had heard about than someone I knew. It was very strange; it felt as though I was momentarily lifted right out of my physical body. I seemed to be suspended somehow beyond space and time, bathed in a love so intense It felt like I could have just disappear into it at any moment if It would have let me. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it seemed to last forever at the same time. I realize how crazy this must sound. The experience was so strong that at first I was afraid I was loosing my grip on reality. I finally managed to chalk it up to an over active imagination.
Three days later I got a call from my aunt telling me that this uncle we are talking about had gone into a coma and died the day I had the experience. It felt like ice water had been poured down my back when she told me this. I had lost any real ideas of God or faith and had become somewhat of an atheist. Needless to say this experience caused me to rethink some of the conclusions I had come to.
I feel blessed to now understand that even in our darkest confusion something loves us so much that it went out of its way to assist me and bring me back to a state of absolute certainty about Gods love for us.
During the experience it seemed like there was a vast amount of information that I was somehow allowed access to. One thing that I came away from this experience understanding beyond any shadow of a doubt was that any Idea that God is unhappy with us or would judge or allow us to be punished for any reason is simply impossible.
I can’t explain the love I felt with words. They simply don’t make words big enough or complete enough to do this. The only way I can begin to convey this love to you is to say that there was simply nothing else there. Nothing but love. No hint of judgment, no displeasure of any sort. It is as though God sees us as being as perfect as we were the day we were created. It is only in our confused idea of ourselves that we seem to have changed.
I hope this is of some help to you. Good luck. Love and blessings.
Your brother don

Since you specifically mentioned "Christian," I will refer to the commonly held Christian belief about God.
It is understood God loves us more than anyone can imagine.
... and God is omnipotent -- all powerful
... and God is omniscient -- all knowing
... and God is omnipresent -- in all places
God created everything.
Evil hurts us.
God created evil.
Love and evil are incompatible.
Therefore, God is an oxymoron and cannot exist as he is portrayed.
If you want further evidence, consider the book of Genesis. Christians believe in the Bible so if the Bible is wrong, the God described in the Bible has not evidence for being true except what people feel.
Noah's flood can be dated per the Bible to approximately 2000 BC. The Egyptian record is basically continuous, using the same language since about 3600 BC (if memory serves - google "Egyptian Dynasties" to see the dates) and they didn't have a catastrophic flood that killed everyone. Noah and his family spoke Hebrew, but the tower of Babel occurred about 102 years after the flood to mix up the languages. Before that, the Bible says everyone spoke the same language. If that is so, then what about the Egyptians? How is it they spoke and wrote a completely different language before the flood and never had a flood that wiped them out?
The short answer -- That story in the Bible is not true. Either it was entirely made up, partially made up, or based on less than divine knowledge. There is no other answer that makes sense.
If you want the companionship offered by a church, think about joing a Humanist organization at aha.org. The American Humanist Association believes in bettering the world through a naturalistic world view. They have a link to local chapters where you can at least get an opposing point of view before committing to a belief.

I was born into a Christian (Catholic) family, and I always wonder what I would believe if I was born somewhere else in the world. Because of that, I have carefully looked at several belief systems (I am just an ordinary person, perhaps a very logical person, but not a religion expert). A lot of my thinking was first "is there a God". For some reason I allways have known there was a God, but I needed to think through it. I guess it was the Animal House movie where I learned the quote "I think, therefore I exist". I guess this is where you have to start... How do I exist and why do I exist. For me, because matter exists, because there are the laws of physis or nature, it had to come from somewhere. Even the big bang had to come from somewhere. Ok, for me, I know there is something more, but what is it? If you try and think of what possibly could exist, you have to come to an idea if it being eternal. I can't explain that one, but if it (God) was not eternal, then how did God get created. I choose to belive there is a God, but my logic is purely personal. Why bother living, or merely existing as something more than an animal if there is not "something more". For me and my house, I choose to believe there is a God (and a good one). I also believe there is only one God (but let me skip the logic on that one to save time).
Now that I believe I was created and there is a God, you have to ask... why? Why bother? Why would a God need to create us. Doesn't that need mean that the God is less than perfect? or less than Infinite?
Well for me, I have come to the conclusion that God is perfect, and that God is a perfectly loving God. So perfect in fact, that he does not need "robots", nor does he need slaves... if your infinite, slaves and robots would be nothing... so why would God bother doing that. My conclusion is that God was so infinite that he/she could do no less that share that infinte love and want "all" to be a part of that infinite infinity.
Ok, so we have a God, who is infinite and I belive loving. How can he help us, and yet still allow us to come to him freely. If God put a burning bush in my yard and started talking to me, even zaping me with mini-lightning bolts when I am bad... I would definitely belive in God, but would I truely and freely believe in God, or would I just be like a pet dog with a shock collar, and be ready for the next handout or shock.
I would prefer to be free, and I believe that God has given us the one gift that is impossible for us to truely understand the awesomeness of the gift. God has given us a free will. Without this gift, we would either be slaves, or robots.
Ok, so I believe in a God, and I believe I have free will. As such, you could say that God has his hands tied (but not really since I believe he helps us learn lessons all the time).
Why be a Christian?
For me, I studied the Muslim religion long enough to determine (in my view) that I liked the "total commitment" but it goes against free will, and thus I think makes us all slaves. God does not need slaves... There is a bunch of other stuff, but 'nuf said on that.
I've looked at the Morman religion, and I believe that Mormans are great, but their religion is based on a "charlatin" and fake.
I've looked at some eastern stuff, and liked a lot, but... I'm still studying.
For me, I will probably stay a Catholic the rest of my life. I think the Christian religion is the religion of love.
Sorry, gotta go, this is too long already.

Give it up Buba! The answers you will get are:
It's in the Bible
I have faith
There is no God
You just have to believe
Pray, and he will answer you
I could go on. If it is proof you are looking for, you won't find it here. You can neither proof nor disproof the existence of God.
Many visitors to this site think they have the answer. None of the above can be proved. Maybe we could get on with life on planet earth a little better, if we all adopted a we don't know attitude. We could try loving one another, and treating each other like we were all part of the same family. Which we are, because, no matter if you believe in the Bible, or evolution, or both, under both assumptions we all share common ancestors. Or we can go on treating each other with hatred and anger, and maybe, end up like the Neanderthals.

If you had absolute proof where would your faith be?
Its a catch 22,
To have understanding you need Faith
To have faith you need Understanding!
You have to do the leap of faith there is no way around it!
To unconditionally believe there is a God, then and only then can you learn of him!
Some can't make it, I'm not sure if I would do it again! (if taken back in time and NOT know what I know now)
In that way I am lucky, blessed, unbelievably favored.
You have to leap, then find a church that teaches the whole word chapter by chapter and verse by verse. If you can your blessed.
Of the 2 churches that Christ liked out of the 7 I have only found (in 35 years) 1.
Good luck to you

Oh I see a long answer comin on. I don't believe in organized religion but I do believe in the all mighty .The reason is I'm in my late 40's and I look back in my life 10 yrs ago and I started seeing certain patterns. This is hard to explain.I'll give u an example. I bought a gold braclet.Months later I found a expensive braclet that I really wanted and it match my ring.Well I should of turn it in but I didn't.I knew it was wrong but I kept it. And about a year ago I was wearing both of them and I lost both of them. So I prayed and told god that I understood the lesson he was trying to teach me.Well about 8 months ago I found my braclet I paid for in the rigges of my closet,So I search my room for the other one.I still haven't found the braclet that I had found and didn't take to the clerk. Plus I know I never will.It was a lesson of life and if your not in tune with it you will miss it,,,There have been plenty more but I'm not here to bore you...Just to tell you to keep a open mind and watch what happens to u in life. You'd be surprized if you connect the dots.

Yes. I believe without a doubt that God is real.
How do I know? Because I've seen His works. As a non-believer I saw His work and influence in other people's lives.
As a scientist, I saw his work in nature.
Now, as a Christian (still a scientist), I see His works even more in nature, and I see His works in my own life and internally, in my heart and mind. He showed Himself to me.
You don't need absolute proof to believe anything. Do you have absolute proof that you have a brain? Or is it just overwhelmingly convincing evidence? Have you ever seen Africa, wind, or love with your own eyes? Do you believe they're real?
There is more than enough evidence for the average user to believe in God. And if you're a serious skeptic like I was, there's still plenty of evidence if you take the time to go find it. It's there. God is real. Trust in Him.

AJ, there's a saying Christians use:
"In every person, there's God-shaped hole."
You're proof exists in you - I can't say this enough - Every person has an innate knowledge of their creator.
It takes time to come to the understanding that, while the knowledge is there, we simply have to exercise belief.
Many things stand in our way, but if you truely want to believe, God will give you the "proof" you are looking for.
Just asking Him prooves a degree of belief.
"Faith of a mustard seed..."

Yes, I believe in God 100%.
Why am I so certain? Because of all the people who have claimed to have heard from Him(both in the Bible & outside the Bible).
I also believe that life itself is proof for the Existance Of God.

live (including u)the complex human brain, more complicated
than any computer,male/female of every kind, the miracles

occurences at any Catholic encyclopedia) Every culture
since the beginning of "time" has had a belief in an omnipotent
being, why is that? Here is your choice: believe in random
chance, or a loving creator who has a plan for mankind.
I go with the second one, cause I can't handle the first!
