My husband and I want him to adopt my son. His real father is fine with it so there is no conflict. I have called 10 different lawyers, gotten ahold of 5 of them, and the least expensive one for a straight adoption was $800. Are there any places that I could find legal service that goes based on income, or for less than $800? (I was thinking it would be about $400, so the price blew me away.) I live near Chattanooga, TN. Thanks in advance.

I would see if your city/town has a legal clinic. Suprisingly enough, most cities do and people don't know about them. Their lawyers usually do work on a reduced fee basis or sometimes even free. Call your city hall to see if this program is available in your area.

If the difference between you doing it and not doing it is $400, cut some expenses for the short term and just do it. Good luck.

Check your local library. if you can find, fill out, and file all of the paperwork yourself, you won't have to fork out so much money to a lawyer.
