When I was growing up (I'm in my late forties now) I use to see nuns walking around on the street, catching the bus, etc. all the time in their habits. Now I don't see nuns like I used to. Does that mean women aren't choosing to become nuns like they used to?

I understand now. I didn't realize nuns don't dress in habits anymore. So it's not that there aren't any, you just don't know they're nuns. Thanks.

I want to become a nun. There are alot more now-a-days that are going back to traditional ways. I want to wear the habit. In all actuality, that is where the nuns are. In the 1960's and 1970's nuns started to liberalize. Young people today, like me (i'm 20), long for what is different than societal norms. They want the simpler life of prayer, the Latin mass, the habits, etc., because it's so counter-cultural. Granted that isn't the whole reason one becomes a nun. They become nuns because it is their calling. But being Catholic is counter-cultural in itself, because we refuse to conform to the ways that society says we should be. And that is why the Church will always stand. It's people may fall (as people do), but the Church itself is infallible.

I think it is a reflection of our society and the values children are raised with. But it is also a statement that the church has lost contact with the younger generation. Fewer young women are choosing to be nuns because they have more options. In the past women did not have so many options to chose from and not being married by 20 was a bad thing. But today they can chose various careers and there are fewer restrictions.

Most of the nuns are now in their 60s or 70s. A few still join up but many of these go into the convent after their spouse dies so they are not that young either.

Very few of them wear their habits much anymore so they are more difficult to spot.

It also means that nuns are not wearing the "penguin suit" They wear regular clothes a good chunk of the time and you might not spot them unless you know the uniform they have.

They have blended into society in a fairly normal way. Many are working in such fields as nursing and social services, have their own apartments, dress like everyone else and this has made their role in society much more acceptable.

They are still out there. They just wear street clothing and they are harder to recognize.
