Prefer to avoid restaurants in the museums themselves. Also prefer to avoid any chain type places.
thanks

Not many moderately priced places near the majority of Smithsonian buildings. Try looking in the food section of the Post. The Washington City Paper has a pretty extensive restaurant review section online.

Market Inn @ 2nd and E. A bit off the mall South of the Conservatory.

See: http://www.americascuisine.com/washington/marketinn.html

Seafood and Steak, wide variety of food and prices.

If you're an adult only party, you can sit in the room with the jazz musicians, bar, and 'interesting' portraits. Otherwise, they have 'normal' booth/table areas.

Otherwise, you can walk/ride to the Gallery Place Metro area. Lots of Asian, and an Irish chain, 'Fado'.

I don't know of anything near the center or west of the mall that's good and moderately priced.

For future reference. No real decent place around the mall. Go to Penn Quarter for Jaleo, they serve Spanish tapas and you can control your budget with ordering just enough small plates. For a really nice place, try Ristorante Tosca...not too far from the mall. Service and food is exquisite.
