Since unused sugar turns into fat and carbs turn into sugar, yes... low carb diets work very well, thank you. I lost 30 lbs in the first two months and 15 more in the next two. I'm now at my 'ideal' weight, and feel great. Don't look too bad, either.
Don't believe the previous post... it's permanent as long as you stay with it. There's no need not to if you're getting the proper nutrients.
'nuff said?

Low carb diets work temporarily - just like any other food-specific diet. In the long run, however, they are more harmful than helpful. See, carbohydrates are fuel. You need fuel to make your body work. If there isn't any fuel coming in, then your body burns other stuff - fat, sometimes, but muscle too. The Atkins Diet (the main low carb organized plan) promotes high quantities of fat and protein. But high quantities of fat, specifically saturated fat, which you find in meats, are not good for your cholesterol and can lead to heart problems.
The most recent year long study found that people on low carb diets didn't lost any more than people on any other diet. They lost more to start with, but by the end of the year had gained back enough weight that they were at the same percentage of weight lost as people on conventional diets, and had higher bad cholesterol levels.
Your body needs whole grains - for fiber and nutrients. But whole grain products are usually higher in carbs. By cutting them out, you eliminate nutrients that you need. Not that people want to talk about it, but if you go on a low carb diet, cutting out grains, you need to increase your intake of high fiber vegetables and fruits. If you don't, expect to be constipated.
Really, your best bet is to increase your whole grains and vegetables, eat a moderate amount of fruit, and eat smaller portions of meat and eggs. Consume sugar and fats sparingly (although you do need fat - don't eliminate it completely from your diet). Drink more water and less soda.
When it comes right down to it, low carb diets probably work because by eliminating entire groups of food, you are cutting back on the number of calories you consume. Fewer calories equals weight loss. So instead of cutting out carbs, just cut back on your calories in general.

Yes, temporarily. It is hard to stick to for a lifetime, so if you want to lose weight quickly, go ahead. Just so you know, when you go off the low carb diet (and you will) you risk gaining back the weight and more.
