It doesn't hurt, Novocaine is a great wonder.
The actual pain of the operation isn't bad. The Dentist has to drill down past the gum and into the bone so he can remove the infection (if any), the root of the tooth, and the nerve. It is about as painful as a tooth extraction, and a pretty similar procedure.
What is painful is the recovery period. When I had my root canal it wasn't too bad, I recovered in about a week and I had pain medication for 2 weeks. The gum took about a month to fill the hole, but after the first week wasn't sensitive.
The tool used is pretty tiny, an there is a chance that it might break off inside. This is a common complication and since the tool is sterile it shouldn't be a problem (at least it hasn't troubled me for the last 3 years).
If all the nerve is not removed, then can get painful when it heals. If the pain continues past two weeks then you will want to consult with the dentist.
I suggest you lay in a stock of soup and pudding. I am don't think you will want anything as cold as ice cream. You will want to eat and drink on the unaffected side of the mouth for a while though.

Number 1 if you are going to get a root canal don't go to a dentist, go to an entodontist. They specialize in root canals. I have had three or 4 of them over the years and it only took about 30 minutes per tooth. My dentist was the one who recommended going to an entodonist. He said he could do one but not nearly as fast. After the first visit they schedule you to come back in a couple of weeks to make sure that all the nerves have been removed and then you will have to make an appointment with your dentist to get a crown. Both procedures are expensive but years down the road you wont miss the money as much as the tooth if you don't get it fixed. The only discomfort was getting the shots to deaden your mouth but it wasn't bad at all.

You will be numb, so you will not be able to feel a thing. If the nerve is already dead, your in better shape yet. People always give root canals bad reps, but they are no big deal, just like any other procedure.
Root canals have a 95% sucess rate. The remaining 5% is the only ones you ever hear about. You'll be fine.

The actual root canal isn't too bad. The drilling is more annoying then painful because you are so numb. It's that days after it ache's. Hopefully your doctor will give some meds for the pain after the procedure is complete.

I have had two root canal's. It is like a regular visit to the denist. It does not hurt, just a little nerving. You are expecting pain and the anticipation of it happening. It is no big deal.

this morning i got my first root canal, it didn't hurt at all. they gave me nitrous oxide and a lot of novicane. at one point i slightly winced and the dentist stopped and gave me more novicane and after that i was so comfortable that i fell asleep during the procedure. the numbing wore off a few hours ago and my tooth/jaw hurts pretty bad but ibuprofen makes it a little better.

The dentist will give u a shot 2 numb the pain, so u'll only feel the pinch of the shot as slightly painful during the entire procedure. After the treatment is done, however, u might feel minor pain, which u can relieve w/ an advil.

I had a root canal done and it hurt like the hell. but my brother had one done and he was fine. So it depends on the person and the dentist.
