The police do not need your permission, at least as far as what they *do* is concerned, to talk to your child at all. (I imagine the actual laws differ by location.)

Mine was arrested for shoplifting (which he did). Because of the kind of kid he was, I halfway expected something like that to happen, so I told him to ask the police to call me, and never sign anything without me, if he ever got in trouble.

They took him (the local police, I mean) to the store office, and convinced him that they wouldn't let him out of the room or call me until he signed his report, which was an admission of guilt. (Which upset me, but not because I thought he should get away with it.)

When I asked if I shouldn't have been present, I certainly got no indication that they, or the store people, thought I had that right.

I still have a great deal of respect for and gratitude to the local police, as I'd had to call them to help me find him several times, and several of them stopped by now and then to "see if your mom needs any help keeping you in line!" but actually, I believe, to see how we were all doing. (He was a very sick kid, and died shortly after those run-ins with the law.)

Well only if the kid is 18+ other then that, the worst they can do is Juvenile Hall and a big long lecture.
