It is the hops.

They are very bitter. Unhopped beer tastes creamy and slightly sweet.

Brewers started adding hops to their brews because they acted as a preservative. Without hops, unrefrigerated beer will spoil in a day or two.

You can find unhopped beer in a few (very few) specialty stores. Most beer sellers don't carry it because it has a shelf-life similar to milk.

It depends on the individual taste buds. Some people taste only the bitter hops while other people taste the total flavor. This is a very individual taste as you can tell by the variety of different beers on the market.

Because of the ingredients. Hops, Barley, malt, all that crap taste nasty even by itself. Combining it all was bound to only make matters worse...hence all the alcoholics! I drink beer every now and then, but not for its awesome taste. I drink it with certain foods for the bitterness it adds. It actually compliments certain foods, but definately not all of them. I prefer a cold coke over all that! Beer goes GREAT with spicy cajun foods, so that is why I drink it sometimes.

If you've drank it for 8 years then obviously you can't hate it too much. I'm assuming that you're only drinking bland, American macrobrews and haven't even attempted to explore the countless flavors that different beers can have. Try a crisp pale ale, a chocolatey porter, a smooth coffee rich stout...there'll at least be one that you'll love.

Hello? VARIETY is the spice of life. Step away from the Budweiser & experiment.

Don't like hops? Try some weisen (wheat) beers. Also try different brew styles.
