An Israelite is a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, descended from the twelve sons of the Biblical patriarch Jacob who was renamed Israel by God in the book of Genesis, 32:28. The Israelites were a group of Hebrews, as described in the Hebrew Bible. There are modern historical debates about the origins of the Hebrews/Israelites.

The phrase Ten Lost Tribes of Israel refers to the ancient Tribes of Israel that disappeared from the Biblical account after the Kingdom of Israel was totally destroyed, enslaved and exiled by ancient Assyria. Many groups of Jews have doctrines concerning the continued hidden existence or future public return of these tribes.

This is a subject that is partially based upon authenticated and documented historical fact, partially upon written religious tradition and partially upon extreme speculation. There is a vast amount of literature on the Lost Tribes and no specific source can be relied upon for a complete answer. In addition, the contemporary use of genealogical DNA testing has facilitated the assertion that certain populations are members of the Lost Tribes.

ten points please?

Today, or in ancient times?

In the Old Testament times Israel was divided into 12 tribes or better yet 10 specific tribes, two half-tribes, since Joseph's tribe was divided into the two half-tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim, and one other tribe of Levi, which had no inheritance among the sons of Israel since they were set apart as the redemption and therefore their inheritance was with God.

After the temple's destruction in the first century a.d. and the change from Pharisees to Rabbinical Jews, the individual association of tribe was disbanded, more importantly as a result of Christianity and Roman ruling of Israel. Currently the only real tribe most Jews generally equate themselves with if any is Judah, because after the temple's destruction Judaism was isolated primarily to this region. Since then most Jews today have married into the group, they share almost as little relation to the original tribes as just about any Middle-Eastern or Caucasian people. A few Jews hold on to believing they are true Levites, and many modern "Samaritans" consider themselves directly related to the tribes of Joseph.

So the best modern answer is zero, unless you want to consider the different ethnic backgrounds mixed in with modern Jews tribes: Ashkenazi (German), Sephardi (primarily Spanish), Mizrahi (North African/Middle Eastern), and Teimanim (Southern Arabian Peninsula).

Who cares? It would be a much better world if the Ten Tribes were relegated to the ash pile of history and we got on with the 21st. century. Why does it matter, what a bunch of itinerant sheep herders were called.

They still do it that way? Just twelve. Benjamin was almost wiped out as a tribe early on, but was replenished. Saul, I think was of the house of Benjamin.
