I think that by nature, they are very protective of their families, which can be both good and bad, depending on the situation. I also think that, as with any powerful breed, if you do not train your dog well you can have a big problem on your hands. You can get by with a smaller dog that isn't completely under your control because they don't do as much damage when they bite. Toy breeds can be very snappy and temperamental, but it doesn't make the news when they attack because no major damage is done. So yes, I do think that pit bulls are more dangerous than other breeds, simply because they are stronger and have the ability to do more harm. But are they bad dogs? Absolutely not.

The answer lies in both. They are one of the breeds that are massively overbred meaning someone has them and wants puppies rather than only breeding well tempered ones etc. That's a sure way to revert to wild behaviors.

Given that some people believe they are cool status symbols (I won't mention any racist comments but....) and it adds all the more mess to the situation by not responsibly selecting dogs for breeding or pet ownership.

In fact I have dealt with protection dogs for years, we personally give PAT's (puppy aptitude tests) and can spot a potential protection dog as early as 8 weeks old or earlier. That's certainly not the dog you want to send to someone as a pet - yet many people unwittingly end up with this 'loose cannon' or hard headed dog that won't obey anyone but the most patient/stern trainers/owners.

Don't forget there are still many dog fighting rings going on around the country and regularly busted. these guys are breeding the loose cannons intentionally.

Make no mistake a pit bull got that nickname from being a bull of a fighter in the pit!

I'm 6'2 and over 200lbs and with full force punches and elbows to the bridge of the nose couldn't get a loose/roaming pit bull to release its bite from a puppy I had. I had to resort to a naked strangle hold cutting off the pit bull's airway which of course worked as it was passing out (and i wish in retrospect I had thought of that first). The reason I wish I had? Because that pit bull was best friends with my pup before and after that incident -- just proving how unpredictable some of them can be.

Personally,I feel that alot of mis-deeds would never occur if breeders of these and every other dog for that matter, made absolutely certain that everyone buying one of their pups was made aware of the dogs exercise requirements and it was understood that they'd need this amount DAILY.A tired dog does'nt cause trouble unless provoked.
Too many people don't think to research the breed before they buy.All they think about is how cool they'll look walking down the street with a pitbull. After a week that wears off. They have no time to walk or train cos the poor dog did'nt come out of the womb knowing it was supposed to be viscious toward strangers.Or it's far more stubborn than it's owner.
If breeders would think to make ALL ThE DOGS REQUIREMENTS known before they take the money far fewer dogs would end up at the pound or neglected and abused.

i do not see that as punishing the breed. He placed down one dogs that had a screw loose. clone of us, dogs could be born with genetic mutations. plenty can ensue in 8 weeks at a breeder's living house or kennel. it really is why you want to come across a respected breeder and purchase the great dogs that money could purchase. it is really major once you've a good functional dogs which could do an excellent type of damage no matter if it isn't raised correct. in case you do not understand the commonplace of the breeder's dogs, then you truthfully do not understand their backgrounds. in case you unknowingly bought from a detrimental breeder, the dogs may not were raised for the entire 8 weeks with the mummy. those that breed combating dogs can not usually leave the pups with the mummy because she is usually a fierce fighter. in accordance on your description, i trust that your chum did the right element through putting this dogs down. In putting the dogs down, it in ordinary words affected one existence, not the entire breed. I see this as punishing both the deed of a detrimental breeder or purely putting down a dogs with a psychological situation. there are countless Pit Bulls that were rescued from undesirable circumstances and make complete recoveries. That purely proves that the region isn't the breed. inspect Michael Vick's dogs at Dogtown. they extremely play with different dogs.

It is completely evil that people say they are evil as they are the most loving and obedient dogs I have ever owned. What rubbish it is to say they are all evil and mean because mine have never ever hurt any body. Only someone who has owned one would know the truth about this matter and I think you should check out what some of the owners have said.
it depends how you bring a dog up as to how it is as an adult. Even the mose pathtic lap dog can be savge and snappy.
Pit bulls are not evil dogs and anyone who thinks they are hould at least know the facts before judging them.
Just you pick up a puppy and try to resist falling in love with it. Try it, you'll be suprized.

I just want to start by saying no offense to anyone who reads this but i think everyone who thinks of pits as horrible dogs should have a mean one unleashed on them....I have 2 pits that are the sweetest dogs you will ever have. It is not the dogs that cause the bad name it is how they are raised and the people that raise them. You can make anydog mean not just a pit so my opinion on this is the plain out truth....Pits are regular dogs just like dobermans, german sheaperds, and even the same as small dogs. it is the trainer/owner of the dog that makes the dog what it is.... So Yes punish the deed not the breed

My son has a purebred pit puppy. She's 5 months old and is adorable. Her coloring is tan, with a bit of white here and there; he says she is a "blue faun" -- under the tan hair, is blue fur, and when she gets excited, her hair stands up and she looks blue. She is VERY submissive with us, rolls onto her back whenever she is given a command, walks beautifully on a leash with no trouble, and has never barked at strangers. I took her for a walk one time around town, and she wagged her tail whenever we saw new people. But one lady asked me if that dog was part pit bull and then acted afraid. Another man looked at her and said, "Keep that dog away from me, it will kill me."

When she sees other dogs, she barks and growls and gets very aggressive. It is an amazing transformation. Once she has become acquainted with other dogs (my daughter's dogs)... and she knows they are friends... she is fine. But they still do a lot of wrestling type of play together, they don't just ignore one another, or sniff and walk away, like other dogs. One of my daughter's dogs is part pit, as well.

If I were going to go to the expense of buying and paying for vet bills, food, etc... I'd get a dog that I wouldn't have to worry about. Even when they are bred for gentleness, as this puppy was, and handled gently, as this puppy is, they still have that inborn sense of aggression towards other dogs. I worry about what may happen in the future with this puppy. And I wouldn't like having a dog that other people are so afraid of.

Yes, punish the deed. But how do you PREVENT the deed? That's the problem.

Pits are bred for fighting. Some are very good dogs, but they all have the propensity for aggression. I am very concerned that many teenagers are mimicking the Rappers and having these animals. Many of these owners have an aggressive nature which is sensed by the dog which makes the dog a problem. I know many of you will think I am crazy, but music DOES impart emotion. I enjoy watching Bullriding...when the chute opens, the hard rock music is turned up to make the bulls buck harder.

They are good dogs with a bad reputation. They are very strong for their size so when one does "go bad" that dog can do a lot of damage. This is also the reason that people train them to fight. Pit bulls that have been mistreated or trained to fight can become very vicious. But remember, this is a result of treatment of an individual breed. Most pit bulls are very calm and good dogs.

They are so misunderstood, the poor little angels.

What people don`t realise is that an animal cannot do such evil. That kind of evil comes from humans. It is OUR fault that SOME pitbulls are vicious. It is OUR fault that their are dog fight and that people are getting killed by SOME of these pitbulls.

I have a friend who has two dogs, a keeshond and a pitbull. And honestly, the pitbull is a much sweeter dog than the keeshond. Better peronality, temperament and just a better dog.

Just like you wouldnt not blame all humans for a fews mistakes, do not blame all pitbulls for being vicious. We train them to be.
