My dog, Dobie Elle, is 7. I just got ownership of her. She is really good dog, but she barks non-stop. She barks at anything or anyone.

I need some help. I tell no, when she does bark. That works for the time being, but then the next time, she will bark again. And then con't to bark.

Need some real help.

Thanx

Dobermans tend to bark a lot naturally. They are also very needy and HATE to be left alone. Maybe that's why the other people gave her up? You need to do some obedience training and teach her to understand and respect what you say. You need to keep her on a leash, so you can control her and teach her something ELSE to do, other than barking. Yelling at a Doberman is useless - they would rather be yelled at than ignored, so they will often be bad just to get your attention.

Please, think about WHY she might be barking.

Excessive barking is usually the result of boredom. Dobermans need a LOT of entertainment and exercise. Does she get taken out of her yard every day for at least an hour? Does she have enough to keep her busy when she's in the yard? Does she have a sandbox to dig in, a marrowbone to chew (a new one each week, discard the old one), a Kong to play with, a companion dog if you need one (like a little mongrel terrier, something cheap to feed), and can she see out of her yard without being able to escape?

A dobermann needs all of those things. Just getting her a shock collar or whatever won't solve the problem and won't teach you why she is barking.

And telling her NO every time she barks? All she can hear is you barking too. You are having a barking competition. It will only encourage her to continue.

I had a Dobie - i'm assuming that's what you have because of her name. She barked ALL the time outside - when finally the neighbors called the pound on me. So, I went to Petsmart and purchased a barking collar. They are a little pricey about $50-60.00. They have all different kinds out now - depending on which one you feel would work. That worked - I put the barking collar on her when I went out.

I hope this doesn't sound mean to you, but we had a choc. lab that non-stop barked at everything she heard a mile away. We would take her camping and it ended up being a nightmare, as all she would do is bark at everyone and everything. My daughter hopped in the car and came back with a shock-collar....needless to say by the next day she was not barking. It allows quiet growls or barks, but the all out shout-barking stopped....she would never listen to any of us when we would say to stop, so this was the last alternative and it worked. It is much better than having to get rid of a dog due to bad behavior. Believe me......IT WORKS!

I had the same problem with my dog. I bought her a bark collar and so far it has been effective. She still barks but stops after one bark (even without the collar on). Now when I take her out for a walk, I let her bark to her heart's content...

Do you keep your dog outside? I keep my dog inside and only
let her out to use the bathroom of I'll let her come with me to get
the mail. If you keep your dog inside it should stop barking
because it can't hear every sound. I want my dog to bark because it deters burglers. They usually won't break into a house
with a dog being kept on the inside. Sounds like your dog was ignore most of the time. She just needs lots of love and attention.

As a last resort I would use a bark collar. We have to use it on our older GSD male because he barks at any cat, dog, or PG&E meter reader! lol We have a dogtra - they can't short it out on their metal bowls - yes, he would do this so he could bark for a short time while the collar cycled through! - and are rechargeable.

You can always try an empty can with rocks, hold it behind your back and shake it when she starts barking. As you do this, say VERY FIRMLY "NO!" and walk away.

Let her know that if she barks, there is a punishment. Flick her ear with your finger, spray her with water, anything that she doesn't like... do that every time she barks.
