They are a historical account most likely transcribed from lost longer texts that account for the history of the Israelites from the Creation to the appointment of Joshua as Moses successor as leader of the Israelites to the Promised Land.

While they contain many laws they should by no means be confused with the Book of the Law that Moses transcribed directly from the word spoken to him by God, on Mount Sinai and in the Tabernacle. They are really about the setting apart of the Israelites as God's chosen people. Thus showing who God is, and the means of Salvation (The Law in theory).

They are followed directly by the remaining historical books of the Old Testament: Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Kings or 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah, and Esther which actually takes place before Ezra. The period between these books and the Gospels is only found in apocypha texts, specifically 1 and 2 Maccabees.

The torah (first 5 books of the Bible) are about the creation of the world, God's starting covenant with man (Abraham actually) and then lists of blessings (which Christians have (and need to claim) because of Jesus) and cursings (which Christians are free from (they need to claim that, too)). It's interesting. . . but. . . when I got to Leviticus. . . I started to skip around.
