First thing to check is to see if you still have your original motor or not? Under your generator/alternator stand you should have a block code and serial number. For your car your block number should be AH, if not then check this link and try to find out want year the motor is from: http://type2.com/bartnik/enginecodes.htm

If you still have you original motor then check out the specs in your owners manual: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/t1_1973owners.php
or this sales spec sheet:

25mpg

If you find that you are not getting what the manual is calling for it maybe time for a tune-up. Also remember that your motor could have been rebuilt and had it's sized increased so that could be anorther reason why you would not get as good as mileage, but increase performance.

27 miles a gallon trust me no matter how fast. Given that 75 to 80 is all she would do might go 90 down hill with the wind.

Not as much as you'd think. I had a 67 and a 68 and they got 23-25 mpg. If you took it real easy you could get a couple more out of them.

I had a '73 bug, and all around average was about 30 MPG.
