Yes, and they were very helpful. Our total monthly payments were about $950 on credit cards & loans. They got our payments down to around $750 a month. Got the interest rates either lowered or dropped completely depending on the creditor. Most credit places will work with a credit counselor because they know the next step for you is bankruptcy and then they would never get their money.
Check around & see how much some counselors fees are. They say it's "free" but still charge for postage & handling of your bills. I think it was like $8 a month for us.

I have about 3-4 months to go in a four year debt repayment plan. I used a non profit service called Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Northeastern Ohio. They have offices all over the place. Now, my experience was great. I have my deposit amount taken out of my bank account every week for a $2 monthly service fee. I was paying alot more than that by mailing checks to 13 creditors each month. My interest rates were reduced... no late fees... a chance to get out of debt. Now some people will talk about their fee. I paid around $20 a month. That's okay with me. Do you want to guess how much I paid in interest before the plan??? I have not lost sleep over the bills and debts because each month brought my balance down instead of up. It may not be right for you and your situation. The initial consultation is free. It's worth a phone call isn't it??? You have no obligation.

Our experience sucked! The guy wasn't interest in getting to the root of the problem. He suggested filing bankruptcy. At the time I did not know better and we filed.
We have good credit now, but the same old problems! If I was going to do it today, I would try doing somethings myself. Like call your creditors to see if they could reduce the interest rates.
Good Luck!

No. I got all the credit counseling I needed when I calculated how long it would take to pay off my cards by only paying the minimum amount. I took a second job that year (1996) and haven't carried a balance since.
