You can squeeze a lot of vehicles into that price range. Most of them compact, entry level vehicles. Starting with what I would suggest for you is. . .
1. Mazda 3 (cheaper than the Civic, fast and reliable, looks great)
2. Scion tC (fast, sleek, reliable)
3. Civic (Si version is faster, but runs over 20k)
4. Mini Cooper (base model is under 20k, drives like a BMW)

These models are based on an estimation of what other 20-somethings would want, reliability, speed and looks. There are mid-sized sedans that start under 20k, but I don't think you'd be satisfied with a car that's stripped down. But a one year old Mazda 6, Ford Fusion or Subaru Impreza would be choices in that category.

For flat out economy with a touch of fun, go with the Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris. I think you'd be most happy in a Mazda 3.
Good luck! have fun.

Dont have all the facts, but we got a new Toyota Yaris....its got the reliability of a Toyota, cheap on gas and almost the cheapest car out there....I love North America, but we cant build cars like the Japanese.

The new Toyota Yaris is awesome. It's all you need. 15,000 fully loaded, 40 mpg (the car will pay for itself with gas mileage like that), and it's cute...perfect chick car!
