I just returned from Playa del Carmen two weeks ago. I didn't want to come back.
You must be staying at an "all-inclusive," if you have adress code for meals. Generally speaking, I think that they are looking for you to appear in dinner in something other that a wife-beater and denim shorts with flip-flops. Think "office casual" with a tropical flare.
Chichen-Itza is worth the trip, although the heat is BEASTLY. At Tulum you can swim (it's on the beach).
As to your passport, the airlines may catch the error, but customs only looked at my passport and did not compare it to anything.
If you haven't discovered this website about Playa del Carmen (and the Mayan Riviera in general), take a look at their discussion forums. They are moderated by people who live there, and populated by frequent visitors.

Resort wear is casual, they don't want you showing up in a swim suit, something you'd wear around your grandparents :) Tulum is very cool, so is Chichen Itza, if you don't speak spanish, get a translator and make sure you can take a lot of pictures. You won't have any problems with your passport with your driver's license. I used to go to Mexico about once a month for 5 years and even got my passport stolen down there and still got home, so you shouldn't have a problem. You will love it down in Q.Roo and the Yucatan.

Resort wear is no bathing suits, tank tops (for men), no shorts and no levis. Docker type pants for men and shirt with collar and women it can be nice clamdiggers, capris, coulottes, with blouse or nice top with the above dresses it up. You don't need heels, skirts or dresses which would be out of place unless it is a sun dress.
While staying in Tulum, its best to go to the ruins there as there are much closer; Chichen-itza is a long 4+ drive. Go there when you stay in Cancun on your next trip; its about 1-2 hours closer.
There is no problem with passport which you should change any ways for no charge. Usually it is only a problem if it is in the last name as first names are often spelled different ways and the U.S. know about common American names. No problem with Mexico, they're not very strict; its coming back to the U.S. and they should give you no problem about it.

Chitzen-Itza is interesting if you like Aztec pyramids and have followed the Anaszi from the SW USA. A drivers license should work for Canada and Mexico. Resort wear is casual—you need shirts with short sleeves and collars and sandles for men; women can get away with anything.

Resort wear: casual shirts and long pants for men, shorty dresses and high heels for women. Have fun with it.
Tulum is worth going, for the ancient history. You can get a combo bus trip to there and Xelha, all in one day.
Your passport will be fine. Nobody looks at your driver's license. As far as anyone's concerned, the typo is your new name.

They mean clothes you can shed quickly, when explosive diarrhea strikes, as it's almost guaranteed to do.
