This is not a question that I would want to ask on Yahoo's Q&A...

What you need to do is get on the internet or check out a book from your local libary on dogs...
When you adopt a dog you are taking on a situation that is personally & financially demanding for 10 to 15 yrs.. To make sure that it is a rewarding situation take the time to look up all the different breeds (& newly popular mixed breeds) of dogs. Learn about the basic charactoristics, good, & bad points in pooches...

You can also hook up with your local animal shelter or rescue organization & they can assist you in finding the "right" dog for your family...

It's unfortunate but many people spend more time picking out a lamp or couch then do a family pet...

Good Luck... I hope find a wonderful family pet & friend!

When I checked the Dog Breed Selector ( http://www.selectsmart.com/DOG/ ) the dog that showed up as being the best small breed for a family with children 3 and under was a Bichon Frise.

I don't have any experience with a purebred of this breed but one of my close friends has a Bichon/toy poodle mix that is one of the sweetest dogs I know and very cute.

AKC breed standard - http://www.akc.org/breeds/bichon_frise/index.cfm

I just have to comment on ladyrain2184's suggestion of a border collie which is a dog I have a lot of experience with :-) Border collies are the most intelligent dog breed and many people get them thinking that's a good thing. If you're herding sheep and want a dog who can do your taxes, it's a great thing but for a typical family with small children, they are very high maintenance. They will babysit your children and they'll also herd them around the room by nipping at them lovingly... often children can't tell a loving nip from a bite though *lol*
I adore border collies but it's no coincidence that the British say "no sheep, no border collie".

Small breeds mostly toys are not that great for children under 5.U might want to look in to a medium size dog like broader collie.

Be careful. Small breeds are often nervous and so a large stable dog may at times be better with kids.

The only bad thing about getting a small dog for kids that young is, kids can be real clumsy and possibly fall on the dog and injure it .

I have a Yorkshire Terrier and she is really great. If you clip them then they really don't shed. My sister has a two year old son and a 7 month old. When she brings them over my dog just loves them. She plays with them and she is so gentle. They are loving dogs and not to much trouble.

a plain ol' mutt. they are probly th most loyal and loving dogs.

if you really want a pure breed,
go here

http://pets.yahoo.com/pets/dogs/breed/alpha

it is a list of the 147 akc regitered dogs (they are all pure breds)

also, i own a buchon they are firmly built and are great with kids.
she is not as small as a poodle (toy that is) but need a bath often. they are fuzzy so your kids would love to pet one.

You shouldn't get a toy breed with 2 preschoolers. A beagle, a cocker spaniel, cavalier king charles spaniel.

it sounds like you have your hands full right now, are you able to dedicate 3months of constant attention to a puppy who needs housebreaking?
don't get a small breed, they don't mix with small children
too nervous and snappy
