I love pasta and don't use heavy sauces, so why do people tell me it's so fattening?

Pasta in itself is not fattening...it is the amount you consume.

Pasta generally has a lot of calories in it and most of it is high-glycemic carbohydrates (http://www.glycemicindex.com). This means that it is quickly digested and often turned into fat by the body if it isn't used right away for energy.

I too love pasta and I eat it probably 4 - 5 times a week. I keep the amount in moderation and load it up with vegetables and other protein sources to balance out the insulin rush associated with eating a high-glycemic carbohydrate.

I also work out intensely and need the energy / calories that pasta can provide.

Therefore, pasta, like any other food, is fattening if you consume more of it than you burn (eat more calories than you burn in a day, you gain, weight, and vica versa). It also happens to be a little more fattening then other foods because of its quick digesting in nature.

Well, pasta may be "fattening". But I've always eaten a lot of pasta and I don't put on weight. Ok, I burn calories very easily. But I always put a lot of cheese (when I say "a lot", it's an understatement!), and I still don't put on weight.

The good thing with pasta is that you don't feel like eating between meals because you're so full! So, if you eat pasta and some green lettuce (or any vegetable) and a fruit or a yogourt, that's perfect! If you tend to put on weight, maybe you can have it for lunch or eat it not too late at night.

But, honestly, pasta is great! Italians may put on weight when they turn 30-40, but they are not as "fat" as Americans. It's what I call good calories!

If you have a healthy diet, pasta definitely should be on your list! And if you make homemade sauces (real bolognese is very good, and not fattening at all, for instance), it's even better for your health!

PS: if you exercise, pasta is the best! Of course, NOT before you go running!

Pasta is fattening only if you lead a sedentary life style. I eat pasta at least three times a week to keep my carbohydrates up because I need lots of energy for framing houses.

Because it's a carbohydrate. You have to exercise to burn that energy or else it will turn into fat.
