Our new 16 month old chi has a ton of soft and rubber chew toys. However he loves to find harder things like pens, pencils, twigs, bark, etc. A friend with a chi told us not to give them rawhide chews or bones because of dental problems with the breed. Can anyone verify or debunk this? We would love to give him something he can really gnaw on because he seems to want this.

I am a Registered Veterinary Technician. Please let me start by saying to all PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER. We generally do not recommend rawhide chews for any dogs. A high percentage of rwhides and other animal-parts chews like pigs ears, have been found to be contaminated with bacteria, and a lot of dogs just can't handle them digestively. Rawhides if used should always be a supervised toy. Nylabone has a large variety of different sizes and textures of chews both edible and non-edible. I'd experiment with some of these of the proper size.

Bones are a no no. They can splinter and cause serious injury to esophagus, stomach, intestines. Rawhides are dangerous because they can chew them down to a very small piece and then get choked on it. Also you have to watch rawhides, pig's ears, etc Dried processed meat products like these that are from poor foreign countries are processed with horrible chemicals that can cause them to be very ill and even die. I buy the nylabones. You get them flavored and the dogs are pretty safe with them. A lot of people love the greenies for their chihuahuas, but I have heard too many stories of dogs dying from pieces getting lodged in their throats and choking them, or causing an intestinal blockage. We have the problems too with our chis eating wood and such. Crazy little dogs...lol

I use rawhide with my guys (even my vet recommends it for teeth). DO NOT use edible nylabones. My small female chi chipped one tooth and lost another chewing one. Don't use greenies eithers. There are a lot of bad things about greenies. Dogs have gotten very sick from greenies. One of mine can't eat them, they make him throw up. Bones are controversial. Some people say raw bones won't splinter. Others prefer not to give any bones at all. I don't give bones but if you choose to, pick a huge beef (not pig or chicken) bone that they can't fit in their mouths and watch them all the time with it.

So what can you use. Rawhides if your dog doesn't rip off huge peices (and usually chis don't). Bully sticks. Beef tendons are GREAT for cleaning teeth. Texas toothpicks (aka cow tails). One of my guys' favorite chewies is Dingo wrapped rawhides. They have a jerky kind of thing in it and they all love it. Mine won't chew nylabones (non edible) or any of the non-edible chewies.

i'm a large fan of Kong toys, fairly the domestic dog Kong (that's accessible in all sizes - shaped like a beehive made up of troublesome rubber) and the accompanying Ziggies treats that are large for doggies to paintings their tiny tooth on. you may also fill a Kong with a small volume of peanut butter. those toys are healing, ward off boredom and are large for teething. also, Kongs are very almost indestructable. They cost slightly yet once you've a small dogs the toy ought to very last something else of the dogs existence.

My chihuahua loves rawhide...I think its a personal choice for every dog owner to make on their own. Try greenies, they like those too.
