Absolutely...the registration application states that the name is to be chosen by the owner. However, some kennels register a dog under the name they choose, before it is pruchased, so it has to have that name forever..If you are using the kennel name, that you bought the pup from, if the breeder didn't already put in on the application before giving it to you, then you must ask the breeder's permission to use their kennel name, if it is a registered kennel.

If you bought him from a reputable breeder, they will probably prefer their kennel name were on it, ask them. The breeders kennel name will usually come first. Other than that, wait and see what his personality is like, something will come to you. Names having to do with speed are very popular with Whippets.

Enjoy your wild Whippet baby!

In my kennel, I do have it in the contract that I require my kennel name on the AKC registration of the pup. It is true, the owner of the pup is allowed to name the pup, but in a show situation you should really put the kennel name on the registration papers. Not all kennel names go in the front of the name. For example, my young show male is Sir Oliver vom haus Bjarne. Vom haus Bjarne is my kennel name. When I sell a pup, I usually will put a letter at the beginning of the puppy papers and write in my kennel name at the end of the spaces. The people can name the pup with the beginning letter on the papers and anything else that fits in between the first letter and my kennel name. If I do anything with another kennel, like I am planning on breeding a female that is mine, Castlebrook's Yenta, with my male Kaiser vom haus Bjarne. Not in the near future. Yenta is my girl, but she came from a kennel that I trust completely. This is what they look like with their pedigrees. Yenta http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/405010.html and Kaiser http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/129285.html
Now when the time comes and I do this breeding, Both Castlebrook and vom haus Bjarne will be on the puppy papers in that litter. It is nice to be able to keep track of the pups this way. We would like our kennel name on a pup especially if it is going in the ring. Although our name will be listed as the breeder at the show. When I get a dog from another kennel, I leave their kennel name on that dog.
If the kennel that you purchased the pup from does not use a kennel name, try to use part of the names of the Sire and Dam as part of the pups name on the AKC papers. There are plenty of show dogs out there that have call names that don't even resemble their registered names. A friend of mine has a dog with Fractured Humor at the end of his name. His call name is Breaker. Breaker got his name as he had a repair to a fracture in his front leg as a pup from his mother pouncing on him. Naming a pup, especially a show pup is difficult! I have a hard time naming myself. I have an 8 month old show female that I have not named yet. My daughter wants her call name to be Sally. I am going to figure out how to put something similar on her papers, but have not figured it out as of yet! LOL
Yahoo edited out the name for a female dog, so I had to change it!!

Some breeders will make you sign a contract that you must use their kennel name as part of your dog's name. Other than that, you can name him/her whatever you want.

Nope.
Normally [in the UK, anyways, dunno about anywhere else], the first bit of the proper name is the Kennels the dog came from, and the second bit is given to the dog by the breeder

Like my dog's called Anlory Nebiolus, technically
We call him Rusty.

Yes I believe that it is the name that you give the dog when you register it.

Kennel PREFIX***ALWAYS*** goes first!!!
