I'll answer your question. First though, you should know that there is no such thing as "Parole" anymore, and hasn't been for a long time (almost 20 years). Only oldtimers who were sentenced under the old system of Parole are eligible for it anymore. Probation, on the other hand, is a sentence. Some people are on "suspended sentence" that is supervised, but is not technically Probation. "Suspended Sentence" allows more freedom than probation, and allows probation officers to handle larger caseloads. The differences between Parole and both Probation and Suspended Sentence is that under Parole, you were sentenced to Prison and went before a board for a regular review (typically every year) where they reviewed your crime, possibily submitted you for psychological evaluation and interviewed you to determine whether you were "reformed". As a country we moved away from "reforming" criminals to a more "punitive" approach. We say that we deter crime by making the punishments severe, not that we take criminals and make them better people by putting them in jail.

Okay, so that's out of the way, to answer your question:
Most states have adopted a "Three Strikes" rule, where you commit 3 gun-related felonies and you get life in prison. There are lots of Federal crimes that result in life in prison. For example: Murder of a federal law enforcement officer. Espionage. Treason. To name a few. Most states consider 1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Homicide to be Capital Offenses. In most cases, in lieu of giving the death penalty you will get life in prison. Additionally, Capital Sexual Battery can get you life in prison. Typically this is a particularly violent non-consensual sex, and even more frequently is sexual battery against a minor child (under the age of 12). Those crimes will get you life in prison, but can also get you the death penalty.

As a general rule however, only repeat serious offenders end up with life in prison. Most entry-level serious offenders get long-term sentences. It's the stupid ones who get out after 5 years and commit the same crime again that get locked up forever.

This is dependant upon the State you are in, or if you are being prosecuted federally or not. It also depends on those crimes that are "life *WITH* the possibility of parole," and what the chances are of actually *getting* the parole.

In California, there are numerous crimes that will get you "25 to life." This means your minimum eligibility date for parole is after 25 years. However, only about 1 in 1,000 are actually released, because, despite the claim "with the possibility of parole," those chances are next to nil.
