Hey Jenn..soon t...,
If by signing up for anything your concern is money, you should be able to find lots of free help on the internet. I looked at the answers above, and they are giving good advice.
Your Birth record, gives Parents names, birth dates and locations. So, that is a lead to their birth records. Write to the vital records in the City, Town, or County - for a nominal fee, you can get Birth records of your ancestors for Genealogical reasons.
Look up their Death records too. Interview your living family members. Get the Obituaries for your recent ancestors, those will give the names of survivors, and parents, locations, and dates. If you can spare 30 dollars, buy FAMILY TREE Maker or some other tracking software. Just don't subscribe to their pay sites.
Look for your ancestors surnames and the word FAMILY from Yahoo search. This will give you hundreds of leads. Find the GENFORUM pages for those SURNAMES, and you will have relatives to speak with online (distant relatives likely).
I am listing some sites I did not see above. The person that listed Family Search is right on!

My mother is reserching her family tree and has been for quite a number of years. There are websights out there that are free, the list is quite long and I cannot list everyone here. I will however list a few good free sights that she uses quite often. If you have a name and a date then it will work better. There are also many good message boards that you may want to try sometimes you can find infomation that other people have already done that follows your geneology lines.
http://www.rootsweb.com
http://www.genforum.com
http://www.lds.com
http://www.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/my_main.cgi (this is a pay sight but it also lists various free information and dates the search is on the middle left side of the page you will find lots of different info when you do a search)
http://www.genwed.com/
You also may want to go to your local towns govenment files and look up documents such as birth and death, marriage, deed, and will records all of this is public information.
Good luck,.

Someone has already listed some of the good free sites. A word of caution, DO NOT take everything you find on the internet as the absolute truth. It is a great place to explore, but you need to verify everything before adding it to your family tree. I have a census document that I know is my grandmother's family, but she is listed as Macce, her name was Grace. Happy hunting.
