I think it's a inbred instinct from their wild ancesters (wolves). Living in the wild, they made their beds by trampling down grass or leaves to make it comfortable to lie down on. Not sure about that, it just makes sense to me.

Dogs circling is a way of checking to see they aren't going to sleep on something potentially harmful like bugs, sticks, rocks etc., also to make it more comfortable. This is an instinct thing, some dogs do it more than others. It does depend on the dog. Hope I helped!

I don't know, but my dog does that about 6 or 7 times before she'll lay down. Drives me nuts lol

my dogs do this when a blanket is all bunched up and they want to lay on it. they try to get confortable before they lay down just like us.

This has been a mystery for ages....some say it is because the mother attempts to "spread her scent" around where she lays.
