I'm sure that you have more sense than to knee your dog! GEeeeeesh! The ignorance abounds!

It is time, perhaps past time..lol..for some very basic training..Your dogs will love to be trained, as it is your way of mothering them, and showing your love....If you will teach them the command of 'SIT" you've got it made....Drill, and drill..like during every TV commercial..
Don't give them any positive attention until they comply with your command to sit...As there are 2 of them, they are competing over the dominance of getting the first attetion from whomever walks through the door..It has become a game to them...as soon as YOU have re-established YOUR dominance, they will behave much better...
Be patient, and consistant...and you will actually enjoy teaching the dogs, and they will enjoy it too>>

SIT

Holding a treat in your left hand just above the dog's nose, gently rest your right hand on dog's rump.
Slowly move the treat in an upward motion while applying gentle pressure to the rump.
As soon as dog sits, say in a very happy excited tone "GOOD SIT" and give the treat.
Repeat exercise 7x. then take a play break and move on to something else.
Every time you put food bowl down or give a treat give the sit command, and wait for the sit. Then once the dog sits give treat or food down.
DO NOT move on to something new until dog has the new command down pat.
Now, when the door opens, command sit..and forcebly MAKE them comply before they get possitive attention...If they are at all smart, they will soon learn to 'sit' on their own, when the door opens..... Don't forget to praise, as they will backslide if you take their new trick for granted..

If you find you are having so much fun, and would like to train them in other obedience commands, e-mail me for training tips..
Get the whole family involved in this...Its good for everyone..

Try watching "The Dog Whisper" this is a great way to learn about dog behavior. When you get home and walk in the door and the dogs start to jump. Snap your fingers and make a shushing noise. It gets their attention. Once you have their attention make eye contact with them and don't say or do anything until they calm down. Each time they start to do it again do the same thing. Maybe tell them hey! or No!. If worst come to worst take them by the collar and remove them from the door area. They are actually claiming this door area as their own. They are bulling you, taking control of the door. By taking them away from the door or getting in front of the door and correcting them you are taking control of the door for your selves.

It really works! Seriously watch the show. It plays on A&E and also I think Bravo. Check your cable listing.

I have to laugh when I read, Buy a jumping harness. That's amazing.

It is really, really simple. When the dog jumps at you, raise your knee swiftly and sharply to catch it half-way. Do this very hard - according to the size of your dog. For a rottie, you have to get a run-up. Perhaps for a shih, it needn't be quite so hard.

You are aiming to shock your dog, AND hopefully knock the wind out of it. I can't understand why people let dogs jump on them. If they jump on a kid, you're sued. It's astounding.

Everyone in the dog's life has to do this so the dogs learn that humans cannot be jumped on and disrespected. Knee them in the ribs. I have been doing this for years and have never known a dog that needed to be kneed more than three times, so I can assure you it works.

Jumping harness, indeed.

Go to your local pet store for a jumping harness. It attatches around their back legs and chest and keeps them from jumping up onto someone. Soon they will get the idea and not do it anymore.

Maybe start with obedience class and go from there. Many trainers will deal with specific problems like this.
