Jesus Christ personally founded the Catholic Church, shorly after his death and resurrection.
All the details are duly recorded in scripture.
Some time later, just as God had prevailed upon King Cyrus of Persia to rebuild the Jerusalem Temple and reestablish the Jews in Jerusalem, he also prevailed upon the Roman Emperor Constantine to bless his universal (Catholic) church.
The simple fact is, the Catholic church converted the whole world for Christ long before the first Protestant ever took a breath, and it still remains the "pillar and ground of the truth" even though the old Roman empire long ago ceased to exist.

A Roman Emperor had a dream the night before a battle that if he painted crosses on the shields of his soldiers, he would be victorious. He did so and won the battle. He then ordered the state religion of the empire changed to christianity. He founded the state church, the Holy Roman Catholic Church. He then appointed a number of leaders for the church. The church leaders and the emperor gathered at several councils, the most famous being the Council of Nicaea, where the books of the bible were edited and put together. They changed the practices of the church to coinside with the pagan festivals to make them an empire wide holiday. Jesus's birthday was then celebrated on December 25, the day of the roman festivla of Saturnalia. Later, the church grew in power and passed the borders of Rome. They still had problems getting the pagans to convert. The only way the scandinavians were converted was because the chruch starved them out, ordering all christian nations not to trade with them until they converted. They masses were swayed with stories of hell, which was not part of the original christian doctrine, ( http://www.what-the-hell-is-hell.com ) After that, the church spread, flourished, divided, and became what it is today.

How do you see Catholicism as not being polytheist?
They acknowledge one Supreme God, but they still pray to many of the "saints" and Mary.
A brief history can be found by looking up Constantine in any encyclopedia.
He "converted" to Christianity, but still held on to many pagan beliefs.
Over a period of time many of these pagan rituals and beliefs were introduced into the church. This was the beginning of the "Roman Catholic" church.
Rome was the controlling power at the time.
Much more could be said, but I will contact you on that.

It's weird how something thousands of years old and so huge could be so simple. Of coarse there is a long history of how The Catholic church came to be the church of Rome but here is the quickie: Just like today with some sports fans, people will start to take the side of the winning opponent, Christs followers vowed to start a new church that praises Christ as the son of god, his followers happened to be powerful men, when the fight was on between pagans and the church, Constantine saw that the churches side was winning so he chose the churches side. It's all about power. Anyways, There are a lot of websites you can look at to get the whole history.

Good question, it's by chance that we are studying rome right now.
Originally Jesus preached to the Roman people in a time of Civil war, and people like nothing better than the promis oh hope in bad times- and that's just what Christ gave them. He, however, attracted attentions from the Jewish priests who turned him in as an insurgent. Jesus was crucified.
Then for years the Christians were spread across Rome as no more than a cult, until Constantine rose to power. Now Constantine had Christian relatives, and he was sympathetic towards the Christian community. Then during a battle he envisioned a flaming cross and won. After that he converted Rome to Christianity.

In about 300AD Catholocism began to get popular. Around that time Rome was the leading power in the world, so they set up the center of the most popular religion in their capital. Thus, The Vatican. So that basically created The Roman Catholic church.

- in 313 AD : Contantine Ist became christian and every catholics can believe in their God without danger in his empire, Constantine Ist bought the territory of Latran in Italy for the christian power (until 1309, when the popes came in Avignon in France) and created the roman catholic church
- in 324 AD : Constantine Ist is claimed as the protector of the catholics
at that time, the roman empire was governing the world, chritians power stayed in Italy where they feeled protected

Jesus Christ set up the Catholic Church and it was born on Pentecost with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
Although it was not referred to as the “Catholic Church” until at least since 107 AD, when the term appears in the writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch.
With love in Christ.
