Obviously time is of the essence with a weekend getaway. Although I would love to go to Hawaii, a 6 or 7 hour flight each way would kill our trip. I'm looking for something no more than 3 or 4 hours travel from Los Angeles. Also this is for my wife's birthday, leaving the kids with the grandparents, and midweek is possible.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE!! Me and my wife live in Sacramento (about a 2 hour drive) The air and the atmosphere there is so uplifting any time of year especially spring and summer. You have more energy, you and your wife will be happy to be together, there are nice people, nice casinos (if you like to gamble), great shows (if you like stage stuff), great views ( if you like the mountains), great walks and hikes (if you enjoy physical things).

This is me and my wife's favorite place to go when we need to relax. It is a beautiful place. You can do a horse carriage ride, go for a walk along a trail, see waterfalls, do tours.... whatever.

It can be exciting and fun, or calm and relaxing... depends on what your looking for but it is all there.

Weekend trips from LA include: Ensenada Mexico-CHEAP and not too far to go to get the secluded pristine beaches of mexico. Not quite Hawaii, but the next best thing(4 hours south). The opposite: Big Bear, rent a sea-doo/ski boat/fishing boat and stay along the lake shore just enjoying being above the smog line of LA/San Bernadino(2 hours East). Closer than both of them is the American Riviera of Santa Barbara, you'll have beaches, mountains, wineries, romance and fine foods, all the class of old school hollywood (1 hour north). Then there is always the debauchery of Las Vegas in which you can pretend to be anywhere in the world, and posibly make money too(3.5 hours East)! Any where you go just realize no kids and just some good ol fashion alone time without worries of traffic, smog, or work to get in the way. Have fun!

My fiance and I stayed at The La Quinta Resort near Palm Springs. VERY romantic. Their rooms are like little cottages with fireplaces. We sat by the pool, tanned, had some margaritas, and in the evening, we went to downtown Palm Springs for dinner and bar hopping.
