Since your question is under engineering, I'm gonna assume that you're not looking for 'finger' or 'that odd sound that the purple pedal your guitar is attached to makes'.

A flange in engineering terms is a support, either internal or external, like an I-beam. It generally attaches to the outside of your structure to give extra support or hinder movement. You can have pipe flanges, frame flanges, or steam cylinder flanges.

the most common use of the term "flange" in engineering is with piping and similar equipment

"flanged pipe" has a ring around the pipe on each end, this is the flange (a short flanged pipe would look a little like a bar-bell)

the pipe flanges have holes in them so the pipes can be bolted together

Flanges are discs with drill holes as per specification to connect different equipments like pipes , pumps, valves tanks ETC. Flanges are of different rating and utmost care should be taken while selecting an appropriate one.

A protruding rim, edge, rib, or collar, as on a wheel or a pipe shaft, used to strengthen an object, hold it in place, or attach it to another object.

( A finger is a phalanx, the plural of which is phalanges, but that is totally different from a flange)
