There is no thing as a straight Husky. There are Alaskan Huskies, Malamuts, Siberian Huskies, and a few others. The Alaskan Husky is actually a selective bred dog that is fast and not that strong (it's not a purebred, but has been bred with a greyhound).

Malamuts are big strong and friendly huskies, however they are very slow.

Siberian Huskies are very wild, very strong, pretty fast and have to be the leader. On dog teams there is usually only one Siberian, and he is the leader. They are very similar to wolves, and often intermate. I once had a half Wolf half Siberian Husky.

Well, you do actually have a scientific argument that will work for you, It is based on the canine genome. :)

And it is true that many of the husky type dogs are called:-

Northern Breeds
which is probably what you mean by the term 'husky'

At some point, all dogs are wolves. So they are all the same that way too! And all the Northern breeds are related that way and more closely related to each other than they are with other breeds.

Depends on where you want to draw the lines. The way you frame your question makes all the difference in the world.

Here's one pic you can use for 'proof' showing their names all in the Ancient/Asian group
http://www.genome.org/content/vol15/issue12/images/large/1706fig2.jpeg

All the Northern breeds that have been tested, have genetic microsatellites that put them on the far left of the chart. Their genetic markers are quite similar.

The rest of the same fascinating report is here:
http://www.genome.org/cgi/content/full/15/12/1706

Different husky type breeds were tested in other countries and found to have the many same sort of baseline satellite markers as in the main study.

But there's a caveat- There are 'northern looking' dogs however, that are contaminated with genes from modern breeds and are crossed back to wolves. Some of the newish breeds such as the Saarloos Wolfdog are genetic scrambled eggs combining modern genes mixed with wolf genes.

Debates can be fun! Have a blast!

Husky..is a generic name given to many varieties of working dogs, used mostly for pulling sleds, and bred in cold weather locals...they are no more ONE breed, than HOUNDS are one breed..

there are many varieties, from all over the world..the Siberian Husky is the most common one, so we use the term mostly to mean them, here in the lower 48 states..However, each Nordic country has their own Husky dogs..
Here is a list of Huskies...as you will notice, they are very different, but all have the original same function>

Northern peoples have bred dogs for 3 primary purposes - herding, assisting hunters, and for pulling sleds and other conveyances. While Northern hunting dogs, most of which originated in Europe, are still commonly working in their intended duties, and herding dogs are still working in many areas, sled dogs are mainly seen now in recreational roles rather than utilitarian ones.

Although the use of sled dogs has dropped dramatically due to the widespread adoption of snowmobiles for winter travel, the days when dogsledding was a way of life are still fondly remembered by many Northerners.

There are different types of huskies - Siberian is one, Alaskan is another, etc. I happen to like and own a Sibe. The females are not too big and they are very smart and cute!

Actually they aren't the same! Siberian's are a specific blood line, as are McKenzie River Huskies. Granted they are all "huskies", but not necessarily the same family.
