Interesting that you would ask a question about the 'Cajun dialect in the New Orleans section.

I grew up in New Orleans and lived in several areas of the city, meeting many different people from every neighborhood and from every social element. There are literally dozens of different "New Orleans" accents and not one is 'Cajun. My accent is pronounced and it's what's called "Irish Channel" which was a blue-collar area near the riverfront populated by Irish and Italian Americans. I have been accused of being from Brooklyn, or New Jersey or Philidelphia, but few ever guess New Orleans. But when I'm back home people know right where I'm from.

I never met a real 'Cajun until I left New Orleans and went to school at LSU in Baton Rouge.

You see, New Orleans is not in 'Cajun country. Until very recently, very few 'Cajuns would even go to New Orleans and like me, few New Orleanians went to 'Cajun country.

It is near impossible to find 'Cajun food in New Orleans to this day. Mulate's, a transplant from down on the bayou perhaps the only exception.

New Orleans is the home of Creole cusine, which is in some ways similar but in many ways very distinct from Cajun cooking.

As to why the accent is so irrisistable, it's because the folks in southern Louisiana including New Orleans never really assimilate their speech into mainstream American speech. In fact, we like being different so many of us actually put an effort into sounding different.

I have found the same attitude in certain areas of the country. Maine Yankees, Tennessee Hillbillys and Texas Cowboys are just some of the folks that are pround of their region including how they talk.

If you are looking to see real 'Cajuns, you need to go down to Lafayette or Breax Bridge or Abbyville.

I live in the Mteropolitan New Orleans area. I love to visit cities like Lafayette, Breaux Bridge, Thibodaux and spend time with the cajuns. Their dialect is unique and what makes it even more entertaining is they are fun-loving people. The accent, expressions and choice of words just bring a smile to your face. That's one of the reasons former Governor Edwards (who is cajun and is currently serving time in the federal pen) was so popular. He was entertaining.
For instance, I attended a luncheon in Baton Rouge in the early 80's where he was the guest speaker. He always started with a cajun joke. This time it went like this:

Boudreaux ran into Pierre who he had not seen fo' sum time. Boudreaux say 'Hey Pierre, how you do?'
Pierre say, 'fine n' you?'
Boudreaux say, 'Man, hadn't you heard, I'm getting married.' Pierre say, 'Oh. no. Who you marrying?'
Boudreaux say, 'Marie!'
Pierre say, ' Marie??'
Boudreaux say, 'You know. Marie from Mamou!'
Pierre say, 'Ooooooohhhhhh!'
and Boudreaux say,'Wot you mean, oooooohhhhh!'
Pierre say, 'Well that there Marie she dun screwed every man in Mamou!'
Boudreaux say, 'Not to worry chad, Mamou's a small town!'

You've got to love it.

Cuz Cajuns are decendents of the Acadians (who are French Canadian) and therefore are automatically irresistible!

Actually, I honestly don't know why, but I completely agree with you!
