There are no hard and fast rules for how quickly cancer grows. That is why oncologists will rarely give anyone a definite answer to the question "How long?" Every situation is different. For example, about a year ago my husband was diagnosed with very aggressive Stage IV cancer that has metastasized to his bones and liver. However, at present he is responding very well to chemotherapy, so that will give us some time. There is no way to tell for sure how much time. We are hoping for a year or two ... we just don't know.

My friend was diagnosed with a very aggressive type of stomach cancer six years ago, and her prognosis at the time was five years. She is still living.

Our best advice to you would be to stay hopeful. Maintain a positive attitude in spite of all that is happening. Try to maintain a healthy diet. Spend time with family and friends. Read and learn about your specific problems and diagnoses. Get someone to help you keep all your medications organized. Have lists of questions ready each time you see your oncologists. Note changes in symptoms to tell your oncology team. Get plenty of rest - don't get overtired.
