There are some the type to tell: North, South, East, or West, everywhere you enhance your watermelon, this summer season you will face the daunting job of determining its ripeness. we've heard each and every variety of advice, alongside with the certainty that a ripe melon, while thumped, will experience greater like a human head than a human chest. Dr. bill Rhodes, professor of horticulture at Clemson college, gives you right here yet warns that for the previous twenty years, he's been hoping for greater useful perception. a million. Thump it. If the watermelon sounds hollow, it is ripe. it is perplexing for much less-gifted ears. 2. look on the colour on the incredible. The watermelon is ripe while there is little assessment between the stripes. 3. look on the colour on the backside. A green watermelon would have a white backside; a ripe melon would have a cream- or yellow-colored backside. 4. Press on it. If the watermelon sounds like it provides slightly, it is ripe. (Rhodes would not like this device because of the fact it could wreck the usual of the fruit.) 5. verify the tendril. If it is 0.5-lifeless, it ought to propose that the watermelon is almost ripe or ripe. If the tendril is completely lifeless, it ought to propose that anthracnose or another fungus killed the melon, or that it is ripe or overripe. If the tendril is green, you ought to attend to %. the melon. 6. count variety the kind of days from anthesis (flowering) or the kind of days from planting. This works exceedingly lots in case you already know the variety of watermelon and how many days it is meant to take for that type to ripen below commonly used temperature and fertilizer regimes. 7. verify the dimensions. it is not unavoidably genuine that when a watermelon is great sufficient, it is waiting; yet below stable situations, it is going to be commonly used length. If it is not, you're probable too traumatic. 8. Crack some. you have have been given an entire field of watermelons, and you will prepare slightly, precise? 9. Is the vine lifeless or death? properly, the watermelon won't be able to get any riper, for you to besides %. it.

I have always used the thump method on watermelon,a old timer told me this years ago an to my surprise it has worked 9 out of 10 times ,when you thump it if it sounds a little hollow then it is for sure ripe but if it has a real firm thump it is usual not real ripe!! hard to explain but hope this has helped .

Like the others before me said, "Thump it, if it sounds hollow it's most likely ripe." My Dad used to say that the uglier (marred & scarred on the bottom) the outside of the watermelon was the sweeter the inside would be. That's because it laid in the field long enough to ripen naturally on the vine....they're always better!

Ripe watermelons are heavy. They also have a greater contrast between the light and dark green stripes. I tend to not go with the yellow spot method. That spot is where the melon rested on the ground and the color of the earth it was planted in can effect it.

At this time of year, they're all pretty well ripe. Does it look like one you'd buy from the store? When you smell it, does it smell like a watermelon (unripe ones won't). If you have quite a few that all look the same, pick one of the biggest and cut it open. Remember not to pick the others until the day you're ready to eat them.

I always look for a yellow spot on the watermelon. The more yellow it is the longer the watermelon was in the field before being picked. Thus giving the watermelon more of a chance to ripen.

Ok... I have heard of two good ways. 1) If the spot on the bottom is yellow and not white or green or 2) when you tap it, it should have a dull thudish sound-if it sounds hollow its not ripe.

Thump on it, if it sounds hollow it is ripe, if it sounds full with no hollowness to it it is not ripe.
