Chill it, then peel and cut under cold running water.
Whoa, several people typed faster, hahaha!
Also, you can use the gizmos sold on the television, the slices will not be as equal as handcut onions and you will have a lot of parts to wash after use but you will spare yourself from crying over onion chopping.
Wait a minute, onions are immigrants too? Do they need visas now?

Always keep your onions in the fridge. When you want to cut them, take them out the fridge, clean them and cut it. You will never cry when you cut a cold onion.
I do it all the time, the only time I cry is when I mess up on the cooking :)

1. cut the onion in half DO NOT CUT THE ROOT OFF
2. cut along the little green lines on the onion down to the root
DO NOT CUT THOUGH THE ROOT
3. cut across and then throw root away
4. NO TEARS AT ALL AND YES IT WORKS ITS HOW I DO IT AND SO DO TOP COOKS

i have noticed if you cut the onion into half and soak it in cold water before chopping it up and walllaahhhh...no tears, dont u cry! and also if you open ur mouth while chopping the onion, coz it opens the tearducs so u wont have a teary eyes!..hope it helps!:)

Wear eye protection for the duration of the cutting process.
P.S. I don't think there are any immigration issues when it comes to onions.

Put a glass of water near where you are peeling / cutting the onion. It works for me.

I put mine in the freezer for a few minutes.
Ginger keeps nice in the fridge too - just grate along a microplane.
