Not a good idea, I have experience at this. During my teenage years, 15- 17 teen a few friends set out to see the world. We ended up in Lake City Florida AREA. Lost and hungry in the swamp and wild country. We stole pears from the front yard of a family that were barbecuing in the back yard. That was the mildest it got. Slept in a ditch with thousands of bugs biting us all through the night.
This is the country, just think of all the crap you can get into in NEW YORK CITY. We survived but we were very LUCKY.

I would say no. Seventeen maybe if you are out of school. Basically you would be vulnerable to muggers, thieves, and rapists if you don't know the way of the streets. And possibly run over if you don't watch the traffic. If you do make sure you carry a cellphone and money. Make sure it is in your pocket where no one can see it and not in a bag or purse. Call home every night to let your parents know you are all right. Check the door to your hotel to make sure it is locked at night. Walk in well lit areas. Be back in the apartment before 10:30p.m. to the most. New York City is a very busy place and full of action. If you have not been there before it is good to take someone with you.

Depends on their level of maturity and street smarts. If they've never been on their own before, I wouldn't recommend starting with NYC.

It would probably be a good idea to have an adult along. My sister and I take her teenage daughter just to make sure she's okay.

Depends on you and how responsible you are. I am a NYer and would only let my kids go for the day.

Sounds like one bad idea. I think that would be considered neglect at this age.
