The easiest way is to use instant potatoes and follow the directions on the box. For that you just put some water and margarine or butter into a microwave safe bowl (add a little salt). Microwave until hot. Add milk or you can use powdered coffee creamer (if using milk you may need to microwave for another minute or two). When this is hot use a fork and whip in the potatoes. If you are using real potatoes I haven't done this, but I would peel the potatoes, cut them into pieces, put them into a microwave bowl and microwave until soft. Check with a fork every two or three minutes. When soft mash with butter and milk, add salt to taste.

Pierce your potato with a fork (1 per person served)

Cook your potato 6 minutes (per potato)

After the cooking time has elapsed, pierce the potato(es) with a fork to see if they are done. You will know they are done of you can pierce the potato with little or no resistance. If they aren't done cook them for at least 1 more minute per potato.

Mash in a bowl and add your favorite condiments to make mashed potatoes (butter, milk, parsley, salt...etc)

Buy the tub o spuds... you can microwave them.

If you don't want to boil them to make them properly. Cook them in the oven first, skin, mash, add butter & milk and there you go!

You can't microwave them because the microwave steams them in their own skin and keeps the starch too soggy to mash.
mashed potatoes need to be dry and flaky to be able to incorporate the liquids and the fats needed to get them right.

When you boil them first... you usually skin them first and the moisture evaporates when they hit the air and they still get flaky when you mash them.
