kids prefer some time in order to talk to someone new to them. You might not want to get involved with her classmates. Just incourage her to talk to someone whom she might get along with =)

Hmmmm, mom. I have never actually heard a child go to her mom and say, " I am too shy to make friends." They may say it another way but not like that. Relax. Take some deep breaths. Your baby will be fine. She will learn to find a friend or two and then more will follow. Kindergarten is always harder on the parents than the kids. If you think it is that big of a deal tell the teacher.........she will smile because this is so common. She will assign your child a play buddy at recess.

She'll settle in... give her time. We were at introduction night and a JK girl came in hiding behind her mother's skirt. My daughter starting SK (1st time in school) tried to approach her, but ended up doing side-by-side play. Afterwards we went out to the playground, and the shy little girl came barrelling across the playground towards our daughter yelling "MY FRIEND!"... Fortunately they will be in the same class this year. She may be the kind to have a few really good friends, instead of being social butterfly... nothing wrong with that !

Do they have show and tell? Perhaps sending something really interesting would help her out...

My son was extremely shy, so we let him pick an activity to join, he chose wrestling. It really opened him up a lot, he started first grade this year and at the orientation was introducing himself to kids he didn't know in his class. I think that the feeling of belonging to something was a big part of it. He got used to being around groups of people and lost some of the nervousness that he usually experienced. He is like a whole different kid now when it comes to social situations.

Before she goes to school, tell her when she gets home you want to know the names of two classmates after school. Hopefully this will help encourage her to get to know some of the other kids. This helped my kids. Also, in the first couple of weeks the teacher will do a lot of activities to help them get to know each other. You might mention how she is shy and worried about making friends to her teacher so that the teacher can pay attention and help encourage her.

Don't worry about this. She will make friends. In kindergarten they have so many chances to play with each other that she will have a new friend in no time.

She can be shy. No sin in being shy.
She will form a closer bond to some kids and these that she has an interest in may be invited for a birthday party - a sleep over etc.

Just tell her to start talking to some of her classmates. Tell her they can't get to know her unless she talks to them. It's tough having a shy child, but I think she'll grow out of it.

Show her how you make friends. Take her somewhere that you would be able to make friends/introduce yourself.

Once she sees how you do it, she'll have a reference when she's in the same situation.
