I'm not a doctor, but I did have very similar symptoms. At first I would wake up with an elevated heart rate. At night I began to "feel" my heart beating which would keep me up. Eventually I began to feel faint climbing stairs.
I was a healthy, normal-weight, 23 year-old male at the time with no history of heart problems.
What it turned out to be was Pericardial Effusion, or the inflammation of the lining of the heart. Mine was caused by a virus (according to my cardiologist, just like the common cold only it settled in my cardiac cavity) which could not be cured- rather I had to let it run its course.
When the cardiac lining is inflamed, your heart has less room to expand. So in order to increase oxygenated blood output, it needed to beat faster. I remember heart rates in the mid 200s- like yours.
I was put on a heavy doses of Ibuprofen (sp) and eventually beta blockers to deal with the symptoms (neither did much, although the latter are good for public speaking). As my doctor assured me would happen, eventually (and very gradually) I regained my health. It took roughly 6-8 months, but now have absolutely no problems. It's been 2 years with no recurrance.
Hope this helps. Check WebMD for more info, but obviously I would recommend a good cardiologist (the ER did not pick up the effusion on my EKG at first).
Good luck.

SEE YOUR DOCTOR NOW!!! It could be your thyriod or panic attacks. But there is medication tha your MD could prescribe. That fast resting heart rate could cause clots to form, and that could cause a stroke or heart attack!
